Waverley foiled by Gods of Thunder

By

Stormy weather washes out penultimate game.

The early signs were good as Waverley players woke up to bright sunshine. There was a certain amount of optimism on arrival at Odiham, the select eleven consisting of Simon Brewer ("KV"), Adam Carmichael ("AC"), Herbie Scarth ("Bertie"), Peter Brewer ("Mr B"), Russ Golding ("Raoul"), Simon Knox ("Chewy"), Jamie Harris ("DJ Teabag"), Bob Moxham ("the Sponge"), Adrian Day ("Mog"), Andy Gudge ("Gudgey") and Will Knox ("Ewok"). However, before the game came two minutes of remembrance for Jack Bland, the young Odiham player tragically killed a few days before the game.

It didn't take long for it to become apparent that it would be one of those days. Odiham's two openers batted aggressively and things were made worse by a sudden downpour, forcing a spike-less Teabag out of the attack. The teams then went off the field twice for rain, only emerging during the brief intervals between storm fronts. An early tea was taken but with the square ruined by rain, the sides were forced onto the artificial strip. Both openers passed fifty before Herb struck, KV somehow deflecting the ball back onto the sticks for a stumping. The other opener relentlessly marched to a hundred before retiring, giving AC a chance to nip out the incoming batsman thanks to a catch from Chewy. The final curtain came down when the players decided to risk a mass Pink T-Shirt nomination over being struck by the lightning forking its way across the sky.

No awards were made due to the incomplete nature of the game. With AC off on holiday next week, this also marks the end of this season's Comments from the Clio. For the last hurrah, AC and Teabag were joined by special guest panelist Laura German ("AC's missus"). But it falls to Teabag to leave us with one last gem, as he was discussing a disagreement he'd had with Mike Tiley ("Topps"). Teabag didn't think he'd done anything wrong, naturally: "I just said he had a large surface area". Cue much amusement from AC and the question "who's Topps?" from AC's missus...
