Review of the Week

Wajid's Warriors win the Weirs Sixes; and other news.

The Weirs Sixes is always one of the highlights of any season and the 2018 instalment was as enjoyable as usual. The final was a face of between Wajid's Warriors and Asian Tigers, with Wajid's team prevailing mainly thanks to a fine knock from Zeeshan Qumar. But all the teams helped to make the day enjoyable, not least the Parents Team who did well to reach the semi finals.

Big thanks go to those who helped make the day possible; Jim Sommerville as scorer, all the umpires (especially John McCrossan and Willy Russell), the Boyd family behind the bar and Ibby, Rehan and co with the BBQ.

The one sour note of the day was when veteran bowler Siggy Young broke his arm while fielding for the Old Crocks team. But as a true club man, Siggy did return to the Sixes from Casualty with his arm in a sling.

The sixes came the day after another disappointing day on the field for Weirs. The 1st XI suffered another dismal batting collapse, subsiding to 120 all out against an under-strength Stenhousemuir side. 120 actually represented a recovery, as Saleem Sajjad (53) and Mo Ali (28) put on a good stand for the eighth wicket. But with Jappie making a solid 48no, Stenhousemuir had little difficulty in reaching the victory target of 121.

Albert Park also went down to defeat, losing by seven wickets to Kilmarnock. Imran Syed top scored with 33 as Albert Park made 134 all out. But Kilmarnock reached the victory target comfortably, for the loss of just 3 wickets.

The Greenwood Cup Final on Thursday was abandoned due to rain after 15 overs. Weirs and West of Scotland will go again on Thursday 9th August.
