Witney Fall At The Last

By Aleck Everard

Witney Town 2 Flackwell Heath 3

In a topsy turvey encounter it was heartbreak for a brave Witney Town playing high flying Flackwell Heath this Saturday.

In a close first half Witney were undone by a wonder strike from the Flackwell Heath full back just before half time.

But after concerted pressure and a much improved 2nd half performance Witney drew level after Younie was brought down in the box and Andy Styles converted the penalty on 77 mins. Then with two minutes left substitute Harry Dalton appears to have won it with a great shot in the roof of the net.

But it was not to be - a corner was poked home for a leveller on the 90 and then with Witney still reeling a 3rd and late blow was struck by Cannon to leave the home side heartbroken. To make matters worse bottom side Bracknell overcame Cheltenham Saracens in their penultimate game 3-1 to leave us bottom on 25 points. Bracknell have 3 points more having played 2 games extra. In between the two side Fairford who have 26 points having played 1 game less than Witney and went down today at home to Thame 3-0. Also in the mix are Kidlington who lost badly at home to Binfield 6-0 - they are 6 points clear of Witney having played 1 game more.

At the top end Shortwood beat Wokingham and Emmbrook 2-0 and Slimbridge lost 4-1 to Ardley. Shortwood remain 1 point clear in 2nd of Ardley with 3 games in hand. In other games Henley Town beat Abingdon Town (our Monday opponents) 3-1 and Reading Town overcame Ascot 3-1.
