Robins Step Up A Gear!

By

Pre-season Preparations Start To Come Together. Report by David Robinson.

Ashton had a comfortable run out against lower league opposition in their penultimate friendly fixture in Derbyshire. Featuring a much more familiar line up it was the visitors who threatened immediately as Chris Baguley’s long pass found Martin Pilkington cutting inside and after his first effort was blocked he hammered the rebound just too high. A long pass for the Millers then found Windsor outpacing the Ashton defence before lifting his effort over the top.

The Robins moved ahead on 11 minutes as a long clearance by Phillips was flicked on by Dale Johnson and expertly finished by Pilkington before a fine move saw Adam Morning’s cross pick out Johnson whose goal bound effort was blocked and then he was denied by a fine save from Higginbotham and headed a further chance wide. On the stroke of half time another right wing cross from Morning found fellow winger Sutherland in plenty of space and he placed his free header into the corner.

Pilkington was back on the score sheet in the second half as Baguley’s long pass split the defence and put the striker clean in on goal and he then outwitted the defence again before being denied his hat trick by the crossbar and then the linesman’s flag. After several subs, one of the replacements Kevin Leadbetter exchanged passes with Johnson before curling home a superb left foot effort and it was he who set up the final goal seeing his free kick glanced home by captain Jay Gorton.
