Match report Ashton United v Southport by David Robinson

Ashton got the better of their National North opponents with a single strike from Scott Metcalfe proving decisive in the second half. The visitors had the better of the first period and Grant Shenton had to tip over a header before on the half hour a penalty was awarded for handball against Alex Frost but Jonathan Royle wastefully put the spot kick over the bar.

A sharp turn by Livesey for the home side saw him shoot straight at Crump before he picked up a loose bal and saw his effort come back off the inside of the post. Immediately on the resumption Matty Chadwick made his way to the by line and saw his right foot effort come back off the cross bar before Metcalfe headed a deep cross just wide. A long ball then saw Sam McMahon take too long allowing Crump to make the save but with 13 minutes left Metcalfe swapped passes with Rhys Nevins before firing home convincingly.

Team: Shenton, , Coo, Brownhill, Frost, Connor, Moses, Crowther, Haining, Livesey, Baguley Chadwick. Subs: Mason, Gorton, Lees, Gee, McMahon, Banim, Nevins, Dorney, Forbes, Metcalfe.
