Honours Even

Report by David Robinson

Honours finished even at the Shawbridge ground as hosts Clitheroe twice came from behind to salvage a late draw. Ashton gave starts up front to both Danny Wilkins and Shelton Payne and they made the better start as Payne put a sidefoot effort from a corner straight at Thompson.

With 17 minutes on the clock a superb cross field ball by Liam Brownhill reached Payne and the former Trafford winger forced his effort home with the aid of a slight deflection. Chris Baguley played a neat 1-2 with Wilkins but was unable to get the ball out of his feet and with Ashton dominating it came as something of a surprise when the Blues equalised courtesy of a loose pass out of defence by Cavell Coo which allowed Cham to rifle home.

After the break a long ball from Baguley picked out substitute Sam McMahon who finished at the second attempt and he could have registered again with 15 minutes left as he turned Scott Metcalfe’s left wing cross against the post. The home side were always a threat, however, and almost on the final whistle Dimitri Tuanzebe picked up a cross and turned inside a defender before beating Phillips from close range.

Team: Phillips, Coo, Brownhill, Haining, Connor, Lees, Chadwick, Baguley, Wilkins, Payne, Metcalfe. Subs: Nevins, McMahon, Crowther, Banim, Halford, Mather, Morning.
