Ashton registered their first away win of the season in the league with a fine victory at Borough Park. Mark Haslam came back in at right back to replace the departed Cavell Coo and the returning Lee Rick also took his place in midfield. They almost got off to the perfect start as aptly named home captain Wordsworth slipped allowing Phil Marsh a clear run on goal which required a good save by Jamieson.
Just before the quarter hour a fine run by Gary Gee saw his inside pass fired past the far post by Marsh. At the other end Tymon’s forward pass split the Ashton defence but was just too strong for Wainwright to latch on to but the breakthrough wasn’t far away for Ashton as the ball was sprayed out to the right wing where Gary Gee put over a fine cross which required just a slight touch from Richard Bennett to open the scoring. On the half hour Ashton could have added another as Jamieson was forced into a headed clearance from a long ball which Marsh put well wide on the volley. As the interval approached Tinnion was fouled by Jay Gorton just outside the area, the free kick being deflected out for a corner which saw Skelton’s header helped over the crossbar after which a quick break by the Robins saw Kayde Coppin put Bennett clear on Jamieson who effected another good save.
Ashton were forced to replace Greg Pearson at half time who had suffered a heavy challenge but within 5 minutes they had moved further ahead as a fine move saw Ashley Young’s ball backheeled by Chadwick into Bennett’s path who provided another cool finish.
There were ironic cheers from the home fans as Skelton finally registered a shot on target and shortly afterwards a cross by McLuckie fell to the same player who brought the hosts back into the contest with a left foot finish from the edge of the area.
With 15 minutes to go Chadwick made a fine break through midfield and played in Lee Rick who dragged his effort disappointingly wide before Workington went close to equalising as the ball fell to Telfer whose cross shot missed Tinnion by a whisker. The hosts’ final attempt saw Tinnion put Telfer in on the left wing before he fired over from a promising position.
