Robins Gift Wrap Points for Sports!

Report by David Robinson.

Ashton slid to another defeat on the road as the hosts recovered from a goal down to take all the points courtesy of a hat-trick from debutant Connor Hall. With Joe Connor back in the centre of defence the Robins made a decent start as Lee Knight’s ball into the box saw Dominic Smalley just failing to keep control before Maiese’s long pass found Chris Baguley just being crowded out.

With just 13 minutes gone Mark Lees spread the ball wide to Knight whose cross was converted first time by Lee Gaskell under the dive of Jake Eastwood and Baguley immediately brought a decent save out of the keeper with a low effort from 25 yards. On the half hour the hosts threatened for the first time as Hall raced on to a clearance but saw Daniel Shaw make the block but with the interval approaching Hall collected McGrath’s pass into the area and fired into the top corner, and 2 minutes later a cross from the right found Hall finishing off the left hand post, and he could have completed a quick fire treble as he headed Schofield’s deep cross past the far post.

On the resumption Schofield’s knock down saw Andy Dales fire straight at McIlwaine before Gaskell’s fizzing free kick was headed to safety and midway through the half Gaskell’s turn and pass saw Ryan Crowther bring the best out of Eastwood with a fingertip save from 25 yards. The hosts immediately stretched their lead as Connor conceded a penalty for a foul on Hall, the striker firing home from the spot and Hall then got goal side of Daniel Shaw who conceded another penalty with strike partner Baskerville proving less successful as McIlwaine pulled off a fine save.

It wasn’t long before the fourth goal arrived however as a bouncing ball was crossed by Dales for Baskerville to make amends and right on time Belgrave’s ball into the area was volleyed well wide by Jerome Slew.

Team: McIlwaine, Smalley, Maiese, Shaw, Connor, Haining (Smith), Lees, Dorney (Crowther), Gaskell, Baguley (Banim), Knight.

SNU: Mason, Roberts.
