Ashton’s play off hopes were surely ended by a second 1-0 defeat to Barwell in the space of 3 weeks in an uninspiring encounter at Hurst Cross. With centre forward Dale Johnson absent Jay Gorton was playing in an advanced role but it was the visitors who were first to threaten as a great long ball from Lower picked out Gudger who was crowded out and then a quickly taken free kick for Ashton by Haslam found Matty Kosylo whose shot beat the far post.
Visiting winger Jack Edwards turned away from Chalmers but just overhit his pass to Gudger and then Greg Pearson’s free kick was fisted away by keeper Castle who then held on to a return header from Aaron Chalmers. Barwell moved ahead 4 minutes from half time as Barlone beat the offside trap and found Phillips in no man’s land having come off his line leaving the visiting forward to find the empty net. As the half ended a header from Jay Gorton saw Martin Pilkington’s attempted overhead held.
The home side strived to get back into the contest after the interval and Matty Kosylo won the ball in midfield before it broke to substitute Chris Baguley who floated his effort over but the closest they came to doing so was when Greg Pearson’s free kick was touched onto his crossbar by keeper Liam Castle. The visitors could have doubled their advantage when a corner from Capaldi saw Lavery’s header hit Phillips on the goalline before being cleared and then Martin Pilkington miskicked after a good run by Chris Baguley.
Most of the Robins’ attempts to equalise foundered on the visitors’ defence before Phillips’ long free kick was headed just wide by stand in centre forward Jay Gorton. Tempers frayed as time began to run out and Matty Kosylo was dismissed for a second yellow card for delaying a free kick and numbers were levelled up as Barlone saw red for a kicking incident right by the corner flag.
