Ashton fielded a weakened team for their final home fixture which allowed Witton to run out comfortable winners. With just 3 minutes played Andrews ball into the area to Titchener needed Greg Pearson to come across to block before Chris Baguley’s corner was headed over the top by Jay Gorton. Baguley himself came close with a right foot effort after a fine run by Coo had set him up but it was the visitors who took the lead on the half hour as a free kick from the left hand side went straight into Ashton’s goal at the near post and they could easily have extended their lead before half time as Daniel Andrews’ corner was volleyed over by Scott Bakkor.
Ashton made a substitution at half time with Aaron Chalmers replacing Coo but it was Albion continuing to dominate the possession as Titchener dragged an effort wide from the edge of the area and Sheehan’s flick put Bakkor into space only to fire past the other post. With Ashton struggling to make any headway up front it fell to Kayde Coppin who put in a cross from the right which just evaded Aidan Chippendale before a foul by Steve Halford led to Andrews curling a free kick just too high.
Witton duly doubled their advantage with 20 minutes left as Bakkor progressed through midfield before setting up Andrews to score off the left hand post and it was soon 3-0 as Alexander Titchener’s cross was helped home by sub Jonathan Dawson despite a possible foul on keeper Ellison. Hancock then put a free kick just past the left hand post with Ellison stranded but with 2 minutes left Dawson’s square pass brought an emphatic finish out of Joshua Hancock. The home side’s only consolation arrived in injury time as a long crossfield pass was brought down by winger Matty Chadwick before he beat his man and finished from a narrow angle. Ashton now look forward to the play off semi-final on Tuesday evening and a rematch with recent conquerors FC United.
