Robins Bow Out Of Doodson Cup

By

Deadlock Broken By Fluke Goal

Ashton United bowed out of the Doodson Sport Cup in a game that could really have gone either way. The first 80 minutes of the game was like a game of chess with both The Robins and FC United of Manchester probing at each other in an effort to create a scoring opportunity.

On 81 minutes with the game looking like it was heading to the dreaded penalty shoot out a deep cross from the left by Liam Brownhill eluded everyone including keeper Phillips and, to everyone's surprise, rebounded into the net from the far post.

It looked a cruel blow for Ashton United, and would have been a sickening way to have lost the tie after competing so well for much of the contest, however on 88 mins Lee Rick lost possession in the middle of the park and the ball was picked up by Greg Daniels who headed towards the Ashton goal and smashed a rising shot into the top right hand corner of the net giving Phillips no chance.

In truth the result was a fair one. Ashton United looked the part in possession and were industrious outside the penalty box but any chances petered out before threatening the home stopper. There was one point of controversy near the end when Rick made a smart run across the box and was caught by Neville standing on his foot. The incident was waived on by the referee leaving the Robins empty handed on the night.
