The future is bright...

By

...the future is Edwards

Aston arrived to play at the Cricket Field in their first Premier Division game since 22nd April 2014. The team that day lined up with Ross “the cat” Fleming in goal, a back four of Glaister, Allinson C, Hewer, R and Preston. The Midfield comprised of Smith, Isle, Austin, Long and Caswell and Carter up front. The only constant the cheery and charming Cheese Allinson.

That side was a far cry of todays side led by the colourful Edwards, the future is bright. You have always been able to hear the gaffer Edwards coming and now you can certainly see him coming even if he in a neighbouring parish in his new yellow apparel, a homage to his hero…
Few people know that Ashley once sold Life insurance to Mexican goalkeeper Jorge Campos during a spring break to Cancun, (Edwards never stops working) this meeting of a great goalkeeper began Edwards infatuation to Campos and thus turned his spare room into a shrine to Campos. He now at last dresses like him.

Aston lined up in a 3-5-2 formation with the Fleming terror twins missing along with Aston enigma Oliver as well as Beer taking a sabbatical to concentrate on how to revive his Megatron. Fans favourite Vincenzo Evans was also missing and may be much more infrequent in appearances this season.

The starting eleven saw two new names in the shape of Joe “snogger” Wood who was last season in an Aston shirt in around 2013, a formidable player and a great signing. Will he play more than five games? If he does a fantastic season could be on the cards. The other new face was Luke Simmons, a long time nemesis of the club but at last he saw sense and joined the Lions of Aston. Simmons now playing as a defender but still has a slingshot of a long throw and thunderous left foot.

The Lions started against the hoops of Hailey slowly with a slightly disjointed pre-season showing with a few of the older players looking slightly leggy, even the short legged powerhouse Darren Harriss was being given the run a round by the ginger ninja “ginge”.
The slow start continued, a ball played in down the right back region of Astons defence saw Clarke back off, back off, back off and then stick out a leg right on the edge of the box, Aston shouted dive, Roger the ref said foul. The Hailey player stepped up and cut across the ball leaving Edwards floundering and wrong footed but to be honest no chance, a superb finish. 1-0 to the Hoops.

Cheese at this point looked like a babybel as the late summer sun took its toll in the midfield, but it was Wood who succumbed first due to a “niggle” that only top level players have, he was replaced by Boyd. Wood would be fine ten minutes later and the new rolling substitutions rule was a huge benefit.

With Aston looking slightly dishevelled Hailey raced into a two goal lead, Boyd defending his own goal was outmuscled close to the goal line, the ball was squared and tapped home from the penalty spot. Edwards was furious and Roger the ref was receiving pelters unjustly.
Half time couldn’t come soon enough, Edwards read the riot act and a tinker in formation to a 4-3-3 seemed a positive switch with high enthusiasm coming from Mr Football himself Matt Wood. Aston hadn’t really laid a glove on Hailey. Would the second half be different?

The first five to ten minutes saw a mild improvement from Aston, a lifeline in the form of a disputed corner saw the Red army pull a goal back, a corner was put in from the right, Rowe who onced described his tummy as a washing machine used it to great effect here spinning it into Pabs path and Lewis thudded home with his left foot, game on.

Aston would soon equalise with Hailey holding an incredibly suicidal high line, Matt Wood on the side line was putting together a Mourinho master class, he told Angus and Colleton who looked like he was running in a fish tank to swop positions temporarily. Literally seconds later a clearance by streetwise Boyd saw Angus down the middle and through on goal, his first touch looked slightly heavy which seemed to convince the goalie Shaun Rayfield he could race out and get it before Angus but Mr Astons turbo boosters were on and he rounded and scored to make it 2-2.

Aston were soon in the best comeback heaven since 1911, the streamlined Lewis battled for the ball down the left and swung a superb cross to Angus who was around 10 yards out, a touch out of his feet wrong footed the Hailey defender and Angus struck the ball home sweetly with his left foot.

Angus was ecstatic as was the whole team, a hard fought victory but much deserved. A great start, a trip to Minster Lovell awaits.
