Bamber Bridge 2 - 3 Belper Town

By

Brig bow out of the cup.

Bamber Bridge tasted defeat in the Integro League Cup quarter-final, with Belper Town running out 3-2 winners at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium.

Brig went in two goals behind at the break, Sam Colbear and Danny South scoring for the visitors.

And the latter added a third on the hour with his second header of the game.

Micky Taylor's side rallied, with goals from Chris Churchman and Matt Dudley giving Brig five minutes of injury time to send it to penalties.

They huffed and puffed but couldn't find a leveller.

The game started lively with the icy conditions helping the ball zip across the turf and the first chance fell Brig's way.

Regan Linney, back from injury, struck a well-hit shot from the edge of the box but Leigh Overton got down well to gather it.

Matt Lawlor was then on hand five minutes later to block South's goal bound effort after a goalmouth scramble in the hosts' box.

But on the half hour mark the away side did hit the front, when Colbear's header had too much power on it for Roccia and he fired Belper into the lead.

Crosses proved to be the trouble for Brig and a five minutes later South bulleted home another into the top corner, latching on to Piteu Crouz's cross.

That left the home side with it all to do, but straight after the restart Linney was hacked down by Thompson, giving Ali Waddecar the chance to pull one back from the spot.

He stepped up but saw his strong right footed effort palmed away by Overton.

And past the hour Brig were dealt with the sucker-punch when another set-piece caused havoc and South headed home the third for Belper.

Adam Dodd had hit the post in the first half and saw another low effort strike the woodwork again in the second, before Dudley hit the post again on the rebound.

That must've made Micky Taylor think it wasn't to be, but with 10 to play Dodd found Churchman and the midfielder slotted home calmly to hand his side a lifeline.

Dudley had a chance on 88 minutes from inside the box which he couldn't squeeze home, but in the first minute of five added on, he did score at the second time of asking from close range.

Brig love a late show and Danny Roccia, the Brig goalkeeper, almost fired home a remarkable equaliser with second to play following a corner.

But it flew just over the bar and that proved to be the last chance saloon, leaving Bamber Bridge to focus on their Lancashire FA Trophy semi-final.
