Mitres stun Swans

By

Cleeve picked up their third win of the league season (and first away from home) courtesy of goals from Michael Ford and Joe Bates.

On a surprisingly good pitch considering the recent weather, testament to the home groundsmen, Slimbridge had the early chances in this Gloucestershire derby with Adam Mace testing deputising Cleeve ‘keeper Elliott Seddon early on.

Cleeve soon started to make their attacking plays though and Harrison Iddles shot narrowly over from wide on the right.

The opener came for the visitors in the 17th minute when a corner fell to Michael Ford 30yds out and the Cleeve midfielder tried his luck. His shot looked to have been saved by Slimbridge ‘keeper Ollie Hall but it slipped under him in the middy goalmouth and trickled into the net.

Slimbridge then took control of the half looking for the equaliser and had claims for a penalty waved away on the half hour mark when the ball struck Jamie Lock’s arm in the box.

Marley Thomas had the hosts best chance of the half saved but despite their dominance the Swans couldn’t create a clear cut chance.

Cleeve had to withstand an early second half onslaught with another Slimbridge penalty claim waved away and a close range headed goal ruled out for offside.

The visitors saw several crosses whistle across the goal line and two shots cleared off the line by Mitres’ Man of the Match Olly Butler as they struggled to break through a resolute Cleeve defence.

The visitors then gradually grew back into the game and the tireless Joe Bates up front nearly doubled the lead on the hour mark.

Shortly after Jack Watts found a way through the Slimbridge defence and passed to Joe Bates but a superb tackle by the Slimbridge defender meant it was a corner kick.

With five minutes to go Cleeve doubled their lead when a quick throw by Watts set Bates through and he calmly slotted into the bottom corner.

It wasn’t to be a comfortable finish for the Mitres however as just three minutes later Korey Pring converted a corner to gove the Swans a lifeline.

Cleeve managed to hold on though to get their first back to back wins of the season.
