Stockport dominated the first half and outscored Burn 5 tries to 1 which gave the visitors an unassailable half time lead of 5-35. The one bright moment for Burn in the half was their try from Steve Kent, but too often Stockport were in control and Burn fell off too many tackles enabling the Greater Manchester side to score on a regular basis.
Burn improved in the second half and scored two tries without response to make the score 17-35. The tries were scored by Sean Hall and Jamie Brookes, however any hope of an unlikely comeback were extinguished as Stockport regained control and scored another 2 tries to make the final score 17-45.
Burn will be disappointed how their season ended, as their bad run saw them slip to seventh in the league, which is the same as last season. In the closing games Burn were mainly playing teams from the top half of the table and they were missing some key personnel, however they would have hoped to have finished higher in the table, just 1 extra bonus point would have seen them to fifth in the table which would have been an excellent achievement. On the positive note this is Burn’s third season at this level and they look comfortable, new players have come in and made an impact, while others have gained vital experience at this level. They reached second in the table at one point, which is the highest ever league standing in their history. Burn will hope to build on this season, they will look to strengthen and push for a higher finish next season.
We would like to thank all those involved in making the club what it is and strives to be, the players, coaches, sponsors, staff, volunteers and supporters, nothing can be achieved without all contributing. Finally, all congratulations to the 2nd XV who have secured promotion as champions of their league, well done to all involved.
