Boars drop points in league derby

By

Eversley and California saw defeat on Saturday away at Bottom Meadow, in a high scoring game against local rivals Sandhurst Town.

Match Report by Ben Thomas

The first half began with the Boars dominating possession along the backline, whilst both teams got a feel for each other. It was early on that saw the best chance of the half for either sides. In the 11th minute, Boars right back Dickie whipped in a deep cross from the right- hand side which was met by Pantony, who’s volley beat the keeper but rattled the bar.

After this, the game became slightly more stretched. The Fizzers looked lively on the counter down their left side however Eversley continued to dominate. The Boars were often bypassing the midfield with long balls, which wasn’t working as the attackers found difficulty in holding up the ball - they found themselves missing an out and out striker to play off. When it came to half time it remained 0-0, not many chances had arisen for either team, despite the dominance in possession from Eversley and the fast counter attacking style of the home side.

Once the teams were back underway, it took just 3 minutes for the deadlock to be broken. The Fizzers striker found himself just outside the box facing his own goal and flicked a backwards shot over his shoulder, looping over Lusty’s head and into the back of the net – a lucky goal most would reason. It was 1-0 to the hosts and the Boars looked panicked – the first 15 minutes Sandhurst pressed high and Eversley struggled to retain possession and therefore break out of their own half.

Despite this, in the 63rd minute managed to bag an equaliser. Davies collected the ball and went on a mazy run, beating two Sandhurst defenders with some lovely footwork and even after being tackled, recollected the ball and finessed calmly into the bottom right hand corner. Eversley were back in the game, but the game remained on level terms only momentarily. In the 65th minute, a Sandhurst corner was seemingly headed out the hands of Boars keeper Lusty, the rebound smashed down the centre, making it 2-1 to the home side. The drama didn’t stop there though, just one minute later in the 66th, Boars substitute Sapsed, drilled a low shot from 18 yards which found its way into the back of the net. It was a goal frenzy! 3 goals in the space of 3 minutes made the game 2-2.

In the following 15 minutes, the game continued at a high tempo. It was end to end stuff, football which was exciting to spectate. Eversley continuously attacked down the left side but when possession changed hands, the Fizzers were coming straight back with their own attacks on the flanks. A few half chances arose but no goals came of them, and in the last 10 minutes both teams were panicked, forcing sloppy forward balls at any opportunity.

A minute before time, the game was stolen by Sandhurst. A break on the right side saw the right back run wide and cut the ball back to an attacker, who pulled off a Cruyff turn and curled the ball into the bottom left corner. The Boars heartbreak was worsened when deep into extra time the ball was nicked from an Eversley defender and fired home from inside the box. This turned out to be the last kick of the game, it ending 4-2 to the hosts. A harsh result on Eversley and California, who battled hard for a majority of the game but were overcome at the last knockings – a draw would’ve been fair.
