Camborne are champions of South West One sealing a return to National League rugby with a convincing win at Wells.
At the final whistle celebrations were muted, due to fact the hosts are in serious danger of relegation. There was definitely a sense of relief on the faces of players and officials at the culmination of a long campaign and the ultimate achievement built on the hard work and spirit of all concerned.
For the trip to Somerset the Cherry & Whites included veteran former skipper Sean Oates and stalwart Martin Woolcock in their backrow and the duo responded superbly. Both worked tirelessly with Oates a constant thorn in the side in the loose whilst Woolcock ruled the line outs.
On a heavy pitch with pools of standing water ‘Town’ had a dream start to settle any nerves with a 1st minute handling move bringing a try for wing Alex Ducker. Rhys brownfield converted superbly from a wide angle for 0-7.
At the end of the opening quarter the visitors doubled their advantage when centre Jack Simmons cut through the home cover on a 20 metre run to the line to dot down for full back Brownfield to again add the extras.
Just before the break wing Ben Drew was forced off with an injury to be replaced by Gareth Mankee and at half time young front row forwards Andrius Zachorovas and Tommy-Lee were introduced for prop Malcolm Hearn and hooker Sam Bartle.
Early in the 2nd period the assured Brownfield knocked two regulation penalty goals to stretch Camborne’s lead to a convincing twenty points margin.
Inside the final quarter the Cherry & Whites added further gloss to their victory when the prolific Ducker received the ball on the end of a handling move to go over for his 2nd score of the afternoon. Brownfield’s conversion attempt came back off the upright.
