1XV well beaten at Lutterworth

Although Lutterworth have been in existence longer than Camp Hill this was our first ever visit to the Club who, up until this season had plied their trade in the East Midland leagues. Camps received a warm welcome both on and off the field.

In the first quarter of the game Camps conceded three tries and with only an Ian Briggs penalty to show for their efforts were 17-3 down. They never recovered from this poor start and were, for the most part, second best to a strong, physical home team who had won six previous home games out of their total of seven victories prior to this match.

Camps did come more into the game in the second part of the first half with Halbey leading by example and Will Wallwork also carrying well. There was a willingness to get the ball through the hands of the backs without really threatening the home line. Another penalty from Briggs was there only reward.

The home side’s response was to secure the bonus point try before half time to take their lead at that stage to 24-6.

Those of us hoping for an improvement in the second half were soon to be disappointed as Lutterworth started to dominate the set piece and were soon able to add a fifth try. A yellow card for lock Shawn Lindeque did not help matters although Camps did have a decent spell of possession with Halbey and the ever-energetic Harry Cunningham to the fore but when the ball was eventually lost Lutterworth went the length of the field for another score.

The home side’s total domination of the scrum then resulted in a further score for their number 8 when Camps were shunted off their own ball. Another length of the field move resulted in a try for the Lutterworth full back stretching the lead to 44-6.

Camps brightest passage of play then followed and a little undeserved gloss was put on the result with a last minute score.

Dan Robinson did well to wriggle clear of his own line and make progress up to half way and then skipper Mitch Lee showed of his footballing skills with a kick into the home 22.Another run from Halbey, a break from Briggs and Will Wallwork was on hand to score under the posts. Briggsy’s conversion ended the match.

The importance of next week’s game against Wolverhampton cannot be overstated as the two Clubs now occupy the bottom two places in the league.
