RGC v Glynneath

Match report submitted by Gary Williams @ovalzone from RGC sources

Following match report kindly supplied by RGC.

The original selection had a couple of last minute changes. Rhun Williams replaced James Lang at stand off and so Danny Cross was placed in the vacated full back role originally filled by Rhun Williams.

Cameron James Davies was elected place kicker and what an excellent job he did.

If ever there was a game of two halves this was it. Leading 52-5 at half-time RGC looked at the start of the second half to rack up perhaps their highest ever points score since entering the Swalec Leagues but a poor second half performance meant it was a case of what might have been.

The game began with Glynneath failing to kick the ball the required 10 metres and from the resulting scrum Cameron James Davies galloped half the length of the field to score the try and add the conversion and shortly afterwards a great counterattacking move involving the RGC backs led to right wing Ianto Parri crossing in the corner. The 3rd score came after only 9 minutes when left wing Carwyn ap Myrddin touched down following a break from scrum-half Davies and the 4th on the 15 minute mark when a loose kick from Glynneath was picked up on the try-line by Tim Grey who merely had to fall down over the whitewash as he caught the ball.

With Glynneath looking very much as if they were still on the bus the scores continued to come thick and fast. The 5th from Danny Cross following a break initially made by Bryn Williams and the 6th, the first of 2 from centre Tom Hughes (Dolgellau) after good work from Tian Loots . Tian Loots himself was next on the scoresheet, this time Mei Parry being the provider, and with Cameron James Davies in fine kicking form after less than 30 minutes the score stood at 45-0 to the home side.

Although things looked to be going from bad to worse for the visitors when their hooker was shown a yellow card, they were in fact next to touch down when from a driving maul they touched scored in the right hand corner. However normal service was resumed when just before half-time a lineout close to the Glynneath line was knocked down by Bryn Williams and centre Tom Hughes (Dolgellau) was quickest to react to the loose ball and touchdown under the posts. Half-time RGC 52, Glynneath 5.

The second half started badly for RGC when after only 5 minutes Tom Seddon was shown a red card for having taken a Glynneath player out in mid-air as the latter was in the process of catching a high ball. Although there was no malice the referee had little choice but to send him to the side lines. In spite of being down to 14 men, RGC scored their 9th try of the game when Danny Cross took advantage of some weak tackling to score to the left hand side of the posts and their 10th came from captain Maredydd Francis as a maul was driven over the line from close quarters.

This was to prove to be the final score for the home side as a combination of their errors and a much improved performance from the visitors meant that it was they who were to score the final 2 tries of the game.

Late on the game suffered a lengthy delay as RGC centre Tian Loots was stretchered off the field with a head injury.

Speaking after the game RGC Head Coach Josh Leach understandably had mixed emotions,

' It was an exciting start by us and I felt it was important that we won the early kicking battle, an area that we had focused on in our pre-match preparations. To achieve the bonus point after only 15 minutes was testimony to both some great skills to finish scores as well as good decision making to put us in those positions. However 10 minutes before halftime our concentration and thus our intensity waned for whatever reason and the half-time team talk was very much about getting us back on track. That we failed to do so was disappointing and we need to learn that if we want to be ruthless we need to keep our focus.

However overall we are in a good position as we finish our first block of games,- RGC have no fixture next Saturday-, and we can look back with a lot of pride to where we are in the table. Every game in this League is a challenge and it says much for this group of players that they are rising to that challenge.'
