Back on track with comprehensive win over Bicester

By

Chippenham make amends for last weeks defeat by beating Bicester 85-12 at Allington Fields. This weeks guest Match Reporter - Mr G Angell

After a tough loss against Banbury the previous week, Chippenham came out firing against Bicester to go within a point of retaking 2nd place in SW1 East. Back on home turf at Allington Fields, where this Chippenham side have only lost 1 game all season, it was going to be a tough match against a Bicester side who have come close to beating teams up and down the league this campaign and have won against the likes of Grove & Witney early on.

Chippenham started well, the ball falling into the hands of Aaron Ascott from the kick off, who ran hard, taking a number of Bicester players to bring him down. It wasn’t long before the ball was passed out wide to find Will Waddington, who showed his skill and turn of pace to get over the try-line for Chippenham. Never too far behind Waddington on the scoresheet, Brad Doggett soon found himself with ball in hand and gaps appearing; he quickly looked to take on the Bicester backline and powered over to score Chippenham’s second try inside the first 10 minutes.

Soon enough, it was the forwards turn to convert their hard work into points against the Oxfordshire side as they began to use the power of their pick and go game to drive through the defence, Andy Rossiter found himself over the whitewash and Chippenham were now 21 points ahead.

However, from a scrum just outside Chippenham’s 22, the Bicester number 8 broke away on the blind side and some soft tackling from Chippenham saw Bicester go under the sticks for a first half consolation try.

Waddington and Doggett soon began to turn up the pressure and both got away to score another try each. Before Will Waddington added another to secure a hatrick before half time, with Chippenham going in to the break 42-5. HT

After some words from the three coaches, regarding the missed tackles, as well as a reminder to return to the game plan that paid dividends in the first 40, Chippenham once again came out the blocks and looked to increase their lead early on with a try from Tom Fogerty. This was soon followed by the returning Ryan Surry, who showed some clever feet and a strong hand off to once again go over.

Never too far behind when it comes to scoring tries, Jacob Unwin exposed gaps in the defence having burst onto a searching pass from Lewis Surry and showed his skill to hold the defence and throw a dummy to score Chippenham’s 9th try of the afternoon. Once again, Brad Doggett, never to be outdone by his counterparts went under the posts after bursting through a number of Bicester players to dive over the line.

Some smart play from the Chippenham forwards saw a short ball played out to the right wing into the hands of Dan Carter, who burst up the touchline and passed inside to Jacob Unwin who chipped over the last man and sprinted to recollect the ball and slide in for his second try of the day.

Chippenham soon found themselves under an immense amount of pressure in their 22 by the Bicester pack, who persistently drove at the line from various attack platforms, a shove from a short 5m lineout saw them go over and get a well-deserved try for their efforts.

Charlie Palmer, another man rarely left off the scoresheet soon found himself receiving the kick off from the Bicester 10 and was able to burst through the Bicester defence and show his footballing ability and speed to race under the posts.

The final try of the day came from Brad Doggett, scoring his fourth try of the game bringing the score to 85-12.

A good performance from the home team against Bicester who never gave up, showed bags of commitment and courage and challenged throughout.
