Chippenham 1st XV signed off their last home performance of the season with an emphatic win against local rivals Swindon RFC winning 92-15. The scene was set with some long overdue sunshine, a firm pitch and a good crowd following a successful sponsors lunch.
With the sun on their backs, the home team immediately opened the scoring with a try from first phase by captain Ryan Surry. The 2 teams had very contrasting ideas on how to play the game and Chippenham very quickly got into their stride with some flowing rugby and a further try by Jake Unwin.
Swindon however, managed to capitalise on some sloppy tackling by the home team with a well taken individual try taking the score to 14-7 in favour of the home team.
Unfortunately for the visitors, Chippenham put together some very effective flowing rugby and using their fitness levels to good effect managing to score further tries by Will Waddington (2), Ryan Surry - his second, Matt Dickens and Brad Doggett. Dan Wainwright at fly half was on song with the boot and converted 5 of the tries.
This took the score to 45-7 at half time in favour of the home team.
The 2nd half was very similar to the first. Swindon defended well and competed at the breakdown areas but could not cope with the pace and the ball movement of the home team.
There were another 7 tries in the 2nd half - Waddington capping a fine performance by scoring 4 tries and Unwin with a hat trick. Sam Saunders capped a fine performance in the unusual position of centre by scoring 2 and once again Dev Squad winger Louis Ayliffe showed what a fine player he is by grabbing another try.
Dan Wainwright added further points with 6 out of 7 conversions in the second half.
Overall, this was an excellent performance for the last home match of the season. We now have to finish off the league campaign with a trip to Stratford-on-Avon on Saturday, then it’s a visit to The Rec in the final of the Bath Combination Cup taking on Keynsham. We look forward to excellent support at both venues.
Here’s hoping to a great finish to a very successful season!
