Clevedon were unlucky to come unstuck to highfliers Thornbury.The Seasiders made the short trip up the M5 to play the Thorns, who are unbeaten at home for the last 18 months.The opening exchanges were even with both sides fully committed, Clevedon started to shade possession but unfortunately either kicked the ball away or lost it in contact. It was against the run of play that Thornbury opened the scoring when some slack defence allowed them to score an unconverted try out wide.The seasiders now upped the ante and were twice denied from scoring by last ditch defending and it was thornbury who scored next with a penalty.
Clevedon cut the deficit with a penalty from Kieran Hill to go into the break with the score Thornbury 8-3 Clevedon.Clevedon started the second half with renewed vigour and big hits from Rory Biggins and Joe Ford led the way. Clevedon closed the gap to 8-6 with a long range penalty from Kieran Hill.The seasiders controlled the third quarter but couldn't turn pressure into points. A momentary lapse of concentration allowed Thornbury to increase the lead with a try (con).Clevedon now threw everything at Thornbury and fine breaks from Dean Ashfield and Mike Taylor really tested the but were thwarted by some last minute desperate defence. KIeran Hill did however guarantee a losing bonus point with a penalty from outwide.
Head coach Nick Hill commented 'On days like these you need the rub and unfortunately it didn't go our way, I was pleased with aspects of our game the lineouts defitinely improved and I cant complain with the spirit in which the lads played Thornbury are a tidy outfit and we are still a work in progress, watch this space!
