PREVIEW:
Coventry Sphinx get their season underway with a short away trip to Highgate Utd. Lee Knibbs has kept the vast majority of last season’s squad and added quality and experience in key areas and they go into the season full of optimism for the next nine months.
Last season Highgate finished in third place in the Premier Division and after a strong end to the season they ultimately fell just short and missed out on promotion by two points. During the summer they have brought in former Bromsgrove Sporting manager Paul Smith who was widely acknowledged as the man responsible for building Bromsgrove’s title winning squad. Highgate are expected to be title challengers again this season so Sphinx start off with a stern test of their own credentials.
Lee Knibbs has worked his squad hard in pre-season and they completed their pre-season fixtures with a match against Coventry City Under 23’s on Monday. A number of established professionals came up against Sphinx but they gave a very good account of themselves despite the loss. Additions to the Coventry Sphinx squad include experienced keeper Tom Cross who joined from Racing Club Warwick, attacking players such as Leigh Phillips and Josh O’Grady, midfielder Chris Johnston and left back Lewis Hudson. They have all impressed in pre-season and so has young striker Liam Rock who has shown plenty of potential already. They will be joined by many of last season’s squad and will be hoping for a successful season in the blue and white of Coventry Sphinx.
