Competition: MFL Premier Division

Fixture: Coventry Sphinx v Boldmere St Michaels
Date: Friday 28th December, 2018
Venue: Sphinx Drive, off Siddeley Avenue, Stoke, Coventry, CV3 1WA
Kick-off: 7.45pm

PREVIEW: Two form sides meet at Sphinx Drive on Friday evening. Both teams have lost just once in their last six fixtures and both teams have scored 16 goals in those six games. Coventry Sphinx are in 4th place and will be looking to close the gap on the leaders who are now just four points ahead of them. Boldmere are in 8th place and a win for them will put them level on points with 5th place Shepshed Dynamo.
COVENTRY SPHINX: Coventry Sphinx won the Coventry derby on Boxing Day and that took them to within four points of the league leaders. That win also lifted them to the top of the current form table with five wins from their last six games. Their only blip was a 2-0 defeat at Lye Town. November ended with a 5-1 win at Wolverhampton Sporting and December started with a big home win against Highgate Utd. A penalty shoot out win over Coventry Utd then sent them into the quarter finals of the League Cup. Defeat at Lye Town followed but Sphinx responded with a marvellous 4-0 win at Leaders Ilkeston Town. They then ended Shepshed’s 18 game unbeaten run when they beat them 2-1 at Sphinx Drive. Boxing Day success followed and now they face the task of taking on 8th place Boldmere St Michaels.
THE OPPOSITION: Boldmere have been on a fine run of form recently but that run of good results ended on Boxing Day when they suffered a 4-0 defeat at Shepshed Dynamo. Before that defeat they had put together a seven game unbeaten league run which included wins away at Westfields and Sporting Khalsa. Draws are rare away from home for Boldmere with just one of their 12 away games ending all square.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS: This will be the first meeting between the clubs this season but there have been many meetings between the clubs in recent years. Last season we had to wait until the last game of the season to welcome Boldmere to Sphinx Drive for a league match. Ryan Harkin scored the solitary goal of that game to give Sphinx the win. In February, the clubs were involved in an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Trevor Brown Memorial Ground. Boldmere raced into a two goal lead after goals from Nesbitt and Shaw but a Luke Downes drive pulled a goal back for Sphinx just before half time. Sphinx completed the comeback with a Harkin strike in added time to take a point.
