IT ENDS ALL-SQUARE AT STAR MEADOW IN LAST GAME.

By

A 0-0 draw away at Hollands & Blair leaves the Crows as runners-up to Ashford United.

Still a great season for the club.
Before the season started and a ball had even been kicked in SCEFL anger, I had carried out some research as to what type of season a team would require to achieve promotion, using historical information based over the previous ten seasons of the now called Southern Counties East Football League and its previous incarnations.
My deliberations came to the following conclusion that a team that plays 38 games would need to win 28 of those games, could afford to draw 6 of the remaining 10 games and therefore, could only lose 4 league games all season. I have to say that whilst it is some comfort that I wasn't far out, for the Crows to end up with exactly that record and not get promoted is bitterly disappointing based on previous league history.
However, you also have to say that if a team can beat that performance then they will probably feel they deserve to win the title too and therefore, you have to give credit to Ashford United for the season they have had. In some ways I'm better for the fact that this game ended 0-0 because had we won and missed out on goal-difference, then my disappointment would have been even greater.
I also have to say that whilst I'm disappointed for myself, the club, management team and the players, it has to be remembered what a great season it has been for all concerned and that if you've done it once, then there's no reason why you can't do it again the following season and hopefully, this time, you achieve your goal.
For Ashford United it's been a case of fourth time lucky for them, having finished runners-up in 2013/14 to Whyteleafe, runners-up again in 2014/15 to Phoenix Sports and finishing third in 2015/16 behind winners Greenwich Borough and runners-up, Hollands & Blair.
Therefore, we should take the positives out of our runners-up spot and take that into the 2017/18 season, especially as history also indicates that runners-up one season have gone on to win it the following season. In 2010/11 Hythe Town won the league with 68 points from their 30 games and the runners-up that season, Herne Bay, won the league in 2011/12 and the runners-up that season, Erith & Belvedere, won the league in 2012/13, getting 76 points from their 32 games.
Therefore, all the Crows have to do is make sure previous history repeats itself, easier said than done I know but if other clubs can do it, then why not us? Let's take the positives out of this great season and not let the last game and the eventual outcome become an anchor to drag us down as we now start to prepare for the 2017/18 campaign.
I was not able to attend the match personally due to family commitments but a report has been written by Kent Sports News and can be read using the following link, http://www.kentsportsnews.com/hollands-blair-0-0-crowborough-athletic-29-04-2017/.
Everyone at Crowborough Athletic hope you all have a great summer and look forward to seeing you again when the 2017/18 season starts in August.
