Old Technicians v Dartmouth 17-02-18
Tribute Devon 1
Old Technicians RFC 18 – 12 Dartmouth RFC
Dartmouth travelled to Old Techs of Plymouth knowing a win would help cement their
ambitions of finishing third in Devon 1whilst also extending the winless run that has seen Old
Techs lose all 10 of their Devon 1 matches since getting promoted from Devon 2 last season.
There was a first start of the season for prop Reg Varney who was persuaded to come out of
retirement for a second time to help the Dartmouth front row after injury had left them short.
It was Old Techs who started the better of the two teams and they took the lead after 16
minutes. Old Techs winning the lineout and driving over for 5 points. They then added a
penalty on 20 minutes to take an 8-0 lead. Varney was then replaced by Matthew Meacock at
prop for his first game of the season and Dartmouth got themselves back into the match with
a fine try from scrum half Henry McCready. Dartmouth won the scrum on the Old Techs 22
meter line and combining well with Captain Jason Gibbs, Henry found a gap through the
middle and ran in between the posts. Dave Champion adding the conversion to leave the
score at half time 8-7.
A quick reversal at half time saw Varney replace Meacock and the second half started well
for Dartmouth with Centre Richard Lobb scoring after a great move from Dartmouth which
saw Luke Chase release a deft kick through the Old Techs defence which made it over the try
line for Lobb to pounce on the ball taking Dartmouth into an 8-12 lead. Another change for
Dartmouth saw Xavier Picot replace Josh Bruckner and just past the hour mark Dartmouth
were punished for giving away one to many penalties and Alex Parrott was the unlucky man
to get a yellow card which took Dartmouth down to 14 players. The next 10 minutes proved
costly for Dartmouth with Old Techs taking full advantage of the extra man and running in 2
tries in 7 minutes. Both conversions were missed which left the score at 18-12. Temperatures
boiled over after the second try was scored with both teams having a bit of handbags and the
referee forced to bring out the yellow card again. Varney was carded for Dartmouth whilst
Old Techs had 2 players carded for their part in the tussle. Nick Shillabeer replaced Dom
Calvert for the last 8 minutes as Dartmouth desperately tried to find that winning try but it
wasn’t to be. Old Techs held on for the win with a very well organised display which perhaps
suggested they were in a false position in the league. For Dartmouth it was a losing bonus
point which leaves them 11 points ahead of 4th placed Totnes.
Dartmouth now make the short trip to local rivals Totnes on the 24th February with a 14.30
KO.
