Hamlet Black History Exhibition to be launched on Saturday

Dulwich Hamlet celebrate the start of Black History Month on Saturday with an unveiling of an eight panel photo exhibition commemorating achievements of various past & present black players over our one hundred and twenty two year history.

They range from gifted Egyptian international Hussein Hegazi, from before the First World War to current winger Nyren Clunis.

The exhibition is jointly funded by the Dulwich Hamlet Football Committee & the Supporters Trust; supported by the ‘Forward The Hamlet’ podcast; & curated & designed by Jack McInroy of the ‘Hamlet Historian’ magazine.

Mishi Morath, community liaison officer from the Football Committee, & a member of the Supporter Trust Board, said:

“It is a small but significant first contribution to Black History Month from our club. There has been many great moments in our long history where black players have had a significant impact, and it’s right that we recognise this.”

While Duncan Hart, chair of the Trust, explained: "“Black players have played a huge role in the club’s history and successes, with Black History Month being the perfect opportunity to highlight the contribution of some of the Club’s terrace heroes,The Trust are thrilled that the club will be officially recognising Black History Month through an exhibition in the club bar.”

The set of pictures will be unveiled in the Clubhouse at one o’clock on Saturday 3rd October, prior to the ‘Pay What You Like’ Charity Match at home to VCD Athletic, in the Ryman League Premier Division and they will remain on display for the whole of October. All fans are asked to come along early to be a part of the event, and hear a little on the players involved..and, of course, the bar will be open to enjoy pre-match refreshments afterwards!

Morath continued: “It shows what a landmark this is when Gavin Rose has agreed to spare some of his vital preparation time before the match to take part in the unveiling.”

He concluded: “It’s marvellous that everyone from the entire Club has got behind this. And the beauty of such a small project to start with is that it is something we can add to and grow year by year.”
