A Tale of Three Penalties as Dulwich Hamlet fail to arrest winless form

Dulwich Hamlet’s stuttering form continued as they came a cropper away to fellow promotion chasers Billericay Town, losing heavily despite taking the lead as early as the 6th minute. It was the team’s heaviest defeat of a season fast losing that early momentum. Having taken just three points from the last six league games, the Hamlet must now be resigned to chasing a playoff spot with the title race but a distant dream.

Dulwich Hamlet could not have made a better start to this key match, taking the lead within six minutes of the kick-off. The goal came from the first of three penalties awarded during the game, each of which seemed a harsh decision. Billericay defender George Beavan was adjudged to have bundled over Ryan Moss in the box and Ashley Carew dispatched the resultant sot kick deep into the bottom corner for his 17th goal of the season. Shortly afterwards home ‘keeper Jack Giddens saved low down from Danny Waldren but I was fast becoming obvious that the soft and uneven surface did not suit the Hamlet’s style of football as they were soon found wanting. In the 15th minute Dulwich lost possession near the halfway line and the ball was quickly transferred down the right to Tom Derry. The erstwhile Hamlet striker squared the ball for Braintree Town loanee forward Jordan Cox to easily tuck the ball home from 15 yards out. Ten minutes later Jordan Hibbert was harshly penalised for a challenge on Teddy Nesbitt and the experienced Glenn Poole made no mistake, slamming home the penalty to make it 2-1 to the home team. Dulwich Hamlet believed they had found an equaliser shortly before halftime when Danny Waldren turned home the ball at the far post following Ashley Carew’s corner. However, the assistant referee had seen something the referee had not and after consultation with his colleague the man in black ruled out Dulwich’s “goal”.

Preston Edwards dived low to his right to hold a close-range header from Derry early in the second half, but it would not be long before Billericay Town added to their advantage. Once more it was a harsh decision as the ball bounced awkwardly and struck Jordan Hibbert on the arm, the referee ruling that it had been a deliberate handball. To make matters worse Danny Waldren was dismissed as his vehement protestations gained little sympathy from Mr Wilson. With Poole off the field injured penalty taking duties passed to Cox whose spot kick struck the post before rebounding into the opposite side of the goal. That was in the 56th minute and ten minutes later Cox would complete his hat trick as he shrugged off Mitchell Nelson before shooting past Preston Edwards from ten yards. After that the Hamlet prevented any further damage but failed to reduce the arrears. Dean McDonald hit the outside of the post from 15 yards in the 71st minute, later squandering a similar opening whilst Damian Scannell thought he had been brought down for yet another penalty only to be booked for simulation by the referee. To add to the afternoon’s woes both Nyren Clunis and Jordan Brown collected nocks in the latter stage, limping out of the fray before its conclusion.
