A resounding victory to Dulwich Hamlet as Gavin Tomlin bagged a brace against Merstham

The Saturday before last Dulwich Hamlet won 5-0 at home to Merstham to maintain the challenge for a playoff place. It was a convincing victory with Gavin Tomlin netting twice as Dulwich led 3-0 at the interval before adding two more goals in the second half.

Dulwich stormed into the attack from the start, forcing several early corners, and placing visiting ‘keeper Josh Smith under continual pressure. In the fifth minute, the ‘keeper made an excellent one-handed save to turn behind a close-range shot from Matt Drage. Nathan Green then fired wide from 15 yards, before Smith dived low to his right to parry a low shot from Sanchez Ming. Dulwich were not to be denied though and went ahead in the 10th minute. Sanchez Ming crossed low from the right, Gavin Tomlin laid the ball back and Nathan Green shot into the bottom corner to the ‘keeper’s left.

Tom Kavanagh, one of six former Hamlet players in the Merstham squad, shot wide in one of the visitors’ rare attacks, but Dulwich continued to dominate proceedings and doubled the lead on 24 minutes. Smith could only parry a low right wing cross from Sanchez Ming and Gavin Tomlin was left with the simplest of tasks to finish. Eleven minutes later, Dulwich made it 3-0. A surging run from Nathan Green was illegally halted just outside the penalty box and Gavin Tomlin arrowed the resulting free kick into the top corner, just beyond Smith’s despairing dive.

Dulwich eased up a shade as halftime approached and Merstham had a chance to reduce the arrears on 43 minutes, but Alex Addai, with only ‘keeper Preston Edwards to beat, curled his shot wide of the far post.

Merstham made a couple of substitutions at the halftime and looked in better shape for a while afterwards. One of the replacements, Omar Folkes, forced a fine block from Preston Edwards, but that was probably the only serious save the Hamlet ‘keeper had to make in the entire game.

Dulwich were soon pressing again and Gavin Tomlin was denied a hat trick on 53 minutes when Dipo Akinyemi, in an offside position, touched his teammate’s goalbound shot over the line. But Dipo soon made amends, scoring Dulwich’s fourth goal. After successive efforts from Mark Weatherstone and Nathan Green were blocked, the Hamlet gained a corner and when the ball came back to him Gavin Tomlin crossed for Dipo Akinyemi to power in a header; Smith made a valiant attempt to save, pushing the ball out, but the assistant referee ruled that it had already crossed the line.

Dulwich Hamlet made three substitutions themselves through the half and it was one of the subs, Panutche Camara, who completed the scoring seven minutes from time. It was undoubtedly the best of the five goals as well. A neat passing move involving several players resulting in Panutche receiving the ball in the inside left channel about 15 yards from goal and he beat his man with an exquisite turn before firing low past Smith into the far corner.
