Rivals Share Derby Spoils

Alex Millington, Jimmy McGlone and Lee Messham ensure Flint Mountain enjoy a share of the spoils against CPD Sychdyn at Wat's Dyke Way

After a disappointing performance and result last weekend, Flint Mountain returned to Wat's Dyke Way as opponents, where CPD Sychdyn were the opponents in the first league derby clash of the season. Having met just last month in the first round of the Queensferry Sports President's Cup, Flint Mountain were looking to replicate the performance, which seen them claim a 3-1 win over their local rivals. Once again, Flint Mountain manager Rob Thelwell was forced into changes to the starting line up. Rob Rush, Dylan Roberts, Sean Evans and Alex Millington all returned, whilst George Jones and Lee Messham dropped to the substitutes bench.

Sychdyn were the first team to draw blood in this thrilling contest, where from a corner, the Sychdyn player rose high above Alex Millington to head into the net. Despite the set back, Flint Mountain continued to probe for an equaliser and found it with just two minutes remaining of the half. From a corner of their own, Jimmy McGlone flicked on the ball towards the corner, where Alex Millington made sure by tapping the ball into the net.

In the second half, Sychdyn retook their lead early in the half as they capitalised on yet another corner, scoring in similar circumstances to their opening goal. Sychdyn's lead lasted only seven minutes before Flint Mountain equalised again. Richie Hughes, playing alongside Jimmy McGlone, controlled the ball and flicked it over his head, taking the defenders out of the equation. Hughes then drove into the penalty area, where three players brought him down and give away a penalty. Once again, it was the responsibility of Jimmy McGlone to take the penalty, and he made no mistake, planting the ball into the net.

The ebb and flow of the game turned towards Sychdyn again with twenty minutes to go, as they took the lead for the third time. Picking up the ball in the Mountain half, the Sychdyn midfielder unleashed a vicious shot, which flew into the top corner, leaving Ryan Roberts no chance in the Mountain goal. Flint Mountain were not done and with just a minute to go of normal time, grabbed the equaliser to level the game. Lee Messham, on as a substitute just minutes earlier, fired a low shot into the bottom corner to save a point for the Mountain.

With no game scheduled for next week, due to the Wales vs Serbia game, next up for Flint Mountain is the visit of Halkyn United to Wat's Dyke Way. Flint Mountain triumphed 5-4 in a thrilling game earlier this season and they will be looking for a repeat result in two weeks time.
