Mountain Mauled By The Lions

Despite leading through Jack Aitken, Flint Mountain crumble to four second half goals as Penyffordd Lions claim the spoils

With the end of the season fast approaching, Flint Mountain looked to pick up some momentum for a heavy schedule, starting with a trip to Penyffordd Lions. the Lions had beaten the Mountain in a tough battle only a month ago, but Flint Mountain had prevailed earlier in the season in the Premier Cup first round. There were starts for Leon Pickford and Marc Gunther, who both recently returned to the club from spells at Halkyn united and Holywell Town respectively, whilst Mark Williams made his debut following his transfer from Mold Alex.

Both sides went for the kill from the off, Flint Mountain having an early half chance, that did not amount to anything, whilst Penyffordd were showing their attacking threat. The first real chance of the game fell to Sean Wilkes, got away from his marker in the penalty area, but could only scuff his effort harmlessly wide. At the other end, it was Ryan Roberts to the rescue, as he made a string of saves as the half progressed, keeping the score level. This included a fabulous triple save to deny Penyffordd, what would have been a certain goal. Despite the efforts of both sides, however, the score remained level at the break.

In the second half, it did not take long for the goals to start flowing, as Flint Mountain struck first. Following a ball into the penalty area, Jack Aitken's initial shot was blocked, but as he shot again, he was then able to find the bottom corner with a left footed strike. The lead lasted until the middle of the second half, when Penyffordd's pressure paid off, when they grabbed an equaliser. Getting forward, the ball was lofted into the penalty area. The ball was then headed on, and the striker was on hand to get a second half, which flew past Roberts and into the net.

Penyffordd began to turn the screw and shortly afterwards, they were ahead. A lovely ball from the right was played behind the Mountain defenders, who could not stop the Penyffordd player getting past them, before firing low into the net. That goal started a quick succession of goals, as Mountain crumbled. Picking the ball up in his own half, the Penyffordd striker grabbed a hat-trick, as he skipped past two defenders and ran through on goal, again finding the bottom corner. Only two minutes later, the win was safe and secure for Penyffordd. From a corner, the ball was headed towards goal, but was cleared off the line. As the Penyffordd players appealed for the goal, Mountain's players stopped, so as the ball fell to the feet of the Penyffordd player on the edge of the penalty area, he simply struck the ball past several Mountain players, finding the net.

Next up for Flint Mountain is the visit of Aston Park Rangers to the Northop Hall Pavilion. Mountain were comfortable 9-0 winners early in the season in the reverse fixture, and will be hoping for more of the same. Kick off on Tuesday evening is 18:15.
