Last Saturday (31st March) Gaerwen travelled the short distance to Llanfairpwll for a Welsh Alliance Division Two fixture. Gaerwen went into the game full of confidence having won 5 out of their last 6 league fixtures.
The away side started the game well with Liam Morris and Connor Gordon creating good opportunities for themselves in the opening 10 minutes. The opening goal of the game came on 11 minutes after some good work from Gordon and Morris saw the latter finish expertly from 20 yards out. The home side thought they had levelled the match on 25 minutes but the goal was disallowed after Iwan Jones was fouled in the build up. This seemed to fire the home side up as they enjoyed their best 10 minute spell of the half, squandering a couple of decent half chances, 0-1 h/t.
Gaerwen doubled their lead on 50 minutes after a great 30 yard free kick from Shaun Monument found the roof of the net. With Gaerwen now looking like they were cruising to victory, they were dealt a blow as Dylan Williams pulled up with what seemed to be a quite serious hamstring injury. With only goalkeeper Josh Roberts on the bench, Williams had to come on and play the last 30 minutes up-front, and to his credit did very well.
This saw the tide of the game turn as Llanfair pushed forward in search of goal to get back into the game. Gwyndaf Owen produced a good save on 70 minutes and the home side saw a header flick just passed the post as time ran out. In fairness to Gaerwen they defended resolutely in a difficult 20 minute period. Llion Vaughan's excellent work down the Llanfairpwll left saw him find Arwel Williams in space, Williams brilliantly skipped passed his marker and fired the ball into the roof of the net to seal an excellent away derby victory. 0-3 f/t.
