Five star Glapwell wrap it up in style

By

Glapwell wrapped the league title up in style by coming from behind to beat Brodsworth Welfare 5-1 at Hall Corner.

Knowing that only a point would be enough prior to the game, Glapwell started edgily in this one and it wasn't until the second half when they finally settled it in style with another masterclass in goalscoring.
The four second half goals came in a 25 minute period during the second half and they all had a touch of class about them, as indeed most have during recent weeks.
There was only one change to the Glapwell side that beat Newark Town last weekend with Daniel Russell returning to the side in place of Sam Bartram who dropped down the bench, there was a return to the squad as well, on the bench, for Jack Hutchinson.
As previously mentioned, Glapwell needed only a point to secure the league title but knew it would not be easy against a decent Brodsworth side that have picked up over the last few weeks.
That was the case, as well, as the visitors proved they were to be no pushovers with an impressive performance, especially in the first 45 minutes in which they caused more problems than any other side for the last few months.
The visitors were unlucky not to be in front inside the opening three minutes when a corner from the right saw Ryan Hopkins parry a header then Glapwell were thankful to Mitchell Mullins who blocked Graeme Severn's rebound off the line.
Glapwell's first chance on five minutes saw Josh Scully and Daniel Russell combine to set up Jake Ballinger but his shot brought a decent save out of visiting keeper Joshua Diggles who parried it behind for a corner.
It was still the visitors, though, that looked more likely to break the deadlock and they went close again on 12 minutes when Ryan Hopkins was called into action again, this time producing a fine save to deny Luke Flanagan.
But, on 18 minutes, it was no real surprise when Brodsworth went in front, the ball being played in to Bradley Maddison from the right and he beat a defender before unleashing a powerful effort that flew into the far corner from just inside the area.
It was, of course, a massive setback for Glapwell but there could be no denying that the visitors had deserved it up to that point and it would be a test of Glapwell's character.
Luckily, though, they passed that test and they got themselves level only five minutes later from the penalty spot after Joshua Diggles had brought down Jake Ballinger inside the area.
Daniel Russell stepped up and kept his 100% recent penalty record intact by slotting the ball home, sending the keeper the wrong way, and increasing his record, which he still shares with Josh Parfitt, by scoring in his ninth successive game.
It was hoped from that point that it would be a wake-up call for Glapwell but still their first half performance was below the standards they have set themselves over recent weeks, there wasn't anything that could be considered as a real clear-cut opportunity for any side other than Rod Purshouse who blazed a shot over the bar from just outside the area.
But half-time came with the sides level and Glapwell knowing that they could only perform better in the second period as they looked to kill the game off early on to reduce any potential nerves towards the end.
It was quickly evident that the second period would be better than the first from a Glapwell perspective and they had their first chance of the second period on 47 minutes but Adam Kimberley blazed his free-kick high over the bar from 25 yards.
But, on 51 minutes, the goal that Glapwell had been desperate for finally arrived as the ball dropped to Josh Parfitt 20 yards from goal and he smashed in an effort that was too good for the keeper. It was Parfitt's 40th goal of the season and he now holds the record with Russell mentioned earlier about scoring in his ninth successive game.
Glapwell's performance was now slightly less edgy but there was still that aspect of nobody wanting to make a mistake, and understandably as they were now closing in on the league title.
With just over 20 minutes remaining, Glapwell nerves were finally settled as they extended their advantage in brilliant circumstances. Ross Murcott got the ball 35 yards from goal and he unleashed an absolute rocket of a shot that flew into the top corner, leaving the keeper with absolutely no chance.
It really was a stunning strike, and so fitting that it was Murcott that had scored it as he is the current longest serving player, making over 115 appearances over the last five years, experiencing the highs and lows, but this one was definitely a high.
Glapwell were now comfortable and they set about ensuring that the title would be wrapped up in more style by searching for more goals to extend their advantage, and they did just that.
Firstly, on 73 minutes it was four for Glapwell as Adam Kimberley played the ball in to Jordan Jones who beat a man on the edge of the area and he laid the ball off to Josh Scully whose shot nestled into the far corner to maintain his record of scoring in every game he has played in so far.
Even more gloss was then added two minutes later as Scully's corner from the left was flicked on at the near post, and not properly cleared, before the ball fell kindly for Jack Hutchinson who bundled the ball home from a couple of yards out.
From that point on, it was a relative walk in the park for Glapwell who seemed content to just wind the clock down and ensure that no more damage was done at the other end.
The final whistle was met by joyous scenes from the Glapwell players and management as the title was secured in some style, and so deservedly as well.
The after match presentation of the league trophy and individual medals was made by the chairman of the league, Eddie Pearce, who also awarded the club the Team of the Month award for April after an 100% record in the month which saw a staggering 50 goals scored in only four matches.
So, Glapwell deservedly wrapped up their first league title in 22 years since they last won the Central Midlands League in 1994 and their first trophy of any kind since the Derbyshire Senior Cup success of 1998.
More records came out of the game, Parfitt scored his 40th game of the season and he, and Daniel Russell, have kept their record going by scoring in nine successive league matches.
Josh Parfitt also made his 50th appearance for the club in the game, and his record is certainly one to be proud of as he has 55 goals to his name in that time.
This was the 10th successive league victory, which equals the club record run from earlier in the season, and marks the 21st consecutive unbeaten league match, which includes an incredible 20 victories and only one draw, with 132 goals scored in that time.
It would be unfair not to mention Brodsworth as well from this one, they were brilliant in the first 45 minutes and they caused more problems for Glapwell than any other side for a while and they can be proud of the part they played in this special occasion.
So, Glapwell's most successful ever league season, in terms of record, is now drawing to a close but there are still three matches left, starting with this Tuesday night's trip to Askern FC, kick-off 7.45pm.
Glapwell's away programme of league fixtures is then concluded next Saturday with a trip to third-placed Phoenix FC, who have played their own impressive part in the title race this season, KO 3pm before the season is wrapped up at home to Askern, a week on Tuesday (17th), KO 7pm.
All of this caps a fine individual day as well for our manager who celebrated his 32nd birthday, and what a way to celebrate that by lifting the league trophy. Top day for Jordan!
Only one more thing to say really, there are a lot of people that put in tons of work behind the scenes at our club, as there are at any, and this success is as much for them as well but this game is all about the players and management who have conducted themselves so brilliantly all season and wrapped up the league title in the best possible way.
Congratulations to all the players and management, you have done yourselves, your team mates and the club as a whole extremely proud!
