Hillmen fall to Pre-Season friendly defeat

By

Glossop North End endured a tough encounter against Sheffield FC, and recorded their first defeat of pre-season

On a warm evening at the Coach and Horses Ground the stage was set for the next chapter of the Hillmen's pre-season campaign. For the first time management duo Mark Canning & Andy Bishop decided to name a squad which included 6 unnamed trialists. Joint manager Bishop slotted in at centre half in a defence which featured Matt Russell and Oli Turner. Daz Mcknight and Alex Elliott occupied central midfield whilst Darrhyl Mason formed part of the Hillmen's attack alongside a trialist.

The first meaningful exchanges in the game took little time to emerge, from the outset it was clear there were going to be goals in the game. Russ Saunders being forced into an early save from a short range shot. At the other end Glossop created multiple half chances to keep the hosts on their toes.

However after 15 mins, Glossop found themselves behind, a free kick for Sheffield was pitched deep into the box at the far post, before being nodded back in to allow Mitchell Dunne to tap home in a crowded penalty area for the hosts. GNE disappointed to concede from the set piece.

The Hillmen reacted to the goal by beginning to pass the ball and keep possession, and sure enough just 10 minutes later found their way back into the game. A short throw in from the left from Daz Mckinight fell to the feat of trialist 7 who managed to turn and get his shot away, launching the ball into the bottom right corner from 20 yards out. 1-1 after 25 mins.

The games was very end to end with both teams creating chances, such that the score was level for all of 4 minutes before Sheffield re gained their advantage. Mitchell Dunne produced a superlative long range strike from well outside the box, dipping the ball into the top right corner to beat goalkeeper Russ Saunders and add his second goal of the game.

Sheffield FC finished the first half the better side, and reinforced their hold on the game with a third goal just on the stroke of half time. A long ball switched right to left by Sheffield allowed a low ball to be played in towards Dunne for him to neatly back heal the ball into the net for his hat trick.

HT Sheffield 3-1 Glossop North End

It was a slow start after the interval as both sides settled into the second half. Glossop looked to mount an early challenge but failed to get on top of the game. Mitchell Dunne got his 4th goal of the game after 59 months minutes after a ball over the top went largely unchallenged and he was allowed to slot low into the goal

Shortly after going 4-1 down, the Hillmen made multiple changes, with Alex Elliott, Andy Bishop, Russ Saunders and trialist 7 leaving the field, replaced by Tom Healey, Adam Cooper and 2 trialists.

Glossop steadied themselves after this and created a few attacking moves, in the 78th minute Tom Healey managed to drive into the box on a storming run before squaring the ball low for trialist 10 who's shot was blocked.

In the 81st minute Glossop managed to grab a second goal, un named trialist 16 evaded the offside trap to sneak through the Sheffield back line. He skilfully rounded the goalkeeper and tapped home an easy finish, 4-2.

However it was the hosts who would have the last say, 7 minutes later on 88 mins Marc Newsham turned in a short range effort from a loose ball inside the penalty area to score Sheffield's 5th goal of the night.

The game finished Sheffield FC 5-2 Glossop North End. An end to end game with plenty of goals was no doubt entertaining for the neutral spectator, however Glossop North End will come away from the game disappointed with the result. The management and squad will be looking to turn things around ahead of the next fixture against Buxton this coming Saturday, where the Hillmen will come up against former bosses Steve Halford and Paul Phillips.
