North End suffer defeat at Cables

By

Glossop North End gave their hosts a good run for their money on Tuesday night, but failed to come out on top, meaning the Hillmen are still yet to win this season.

Glossop North End arrived at Volair Park hoping to kick start their season after defeat to Atherton at Surrey Street on Saturday. Mark Canning & Andy Bishop named a fairly unchanged starting 11, GNE returnee Jason Hill was named in defence in place of Paul Sunderland whilst Danny Pemberton got his first start of the season on the left wing in place of Alex Elliott. New signing Jack Tuohy took a place on the bench.

Both teams were straight out of the box in the opening exchanges, Darren McKnight was allowed a shot from long range and also whipped in an inviting cross which had the Prescot defence in action early on. It was clear from the off that there would be goals in this game, Prescot going close with a looping header that luckily bounced off the bar and out of play.

The Hillmen showed more confidence in their game as the half wore on and entered a good spell of play. Danny Pemberton made multiple impressive runs down the left flank to cross for Jordan Bove, only for a handball from Bove to give away the free kick to the hosts. The hosts would be the first to get on the score sheet.

In the midst of their promising spell of play, Glossop were caught on the break. A headed clearance out of the Prescot penalty area fell to Danny Pemberton who got a shot away, only for the ball to be blocked and fall out of play for a corner, from the resulting corner, Prescot Keeper Ben Barnes was able to punch clear. This put Prescot on the breakaway with Michael Monaghan, Russ Saunders came out to close the striker down only to make contact and bring Monaghan down inside the GNE box, referee Jon Kenny pointing straight to the penalty spot.
The Prescot number 9 Monaghan smashed home the resulting spot kick, undoing all of Glossop’s hard work and leaving them 1-0 down. Shortly after this it was to get worse for the visitors just 2 minutes later. The ball got tapped over the GNE back line and into the feet of Chris Almond who beat the offside trap and slotted home into the bottom of the net. GNE conceding 2 goals in 2 minutes to put them 2-0 down after 24 minutes.

The following period of the game saw Glossop re-gain their composure, with lots of balls entering the opposition box, but with no end product to show for it. However, just on the stroke of half time, the Hillmen were to get themselves back into the game. After a slick move down the right hand side, Darrhyl Mason received the ball from Jordan Bove, before turning and laying off to the feet of Jack Burke who drilled the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal! HT Prescot 2-1 GNE.

The Hillmen needed a strong start to the second half and got just that, with both McKnight & Mason making runs down the right to stretch the Prescot defence. However it wasn’t long before Glossop were to survive a big scare. Matt Hamilton was allowed tonnes of space inside the Glossop penalty area, his shot was just wide!

Later on in the game Hamilton extended the hosts advantage, again he was allowed to pick his spot from 12 yards out to blast home from short range after Almond had initially provided the cross.

Glossop didn’t create a high amount of chances in the second half with Prescot keeper Barnes relatively untested apart from a Darren McKnight shot that was tipped wide. At the other end, Glossop North End keeper Russ Saunders was in the thick of the action with a triple save! Repeatedly keeping out efforts from both Hamilton & Southworth in quick succession.

In the end the game finished Prescot Cables 3-1 Glossop North End, a crowd of 344 enjoyed an entertaining game that could have been different had the visitors been able to capitalise on their bright spells of play. Mark Canning & Andy Bishop now have to prepare the squad for an FA Cup trip to City of Liverpool this coming Saturday, where changes and squad rotation could be possible as the management and players start to gel together.
