GNE 0-2 Clitheroe

By

Glossop North End suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Clitheroe on Tuesday evening.

After beating Radcliffe Borough last time out in the league, Glossop had the
chance to make it back-to-back wins against Clitheroe.

This did not go to plan however as Clitheroe took the lead inside the first two
minutes. Hyuga Tanner provided a superb cross from the right hand side for
Jonah Gosling who made no mistake and headed the ball past Saunders.

Glossop nearly made an immediate response. Darrhyl Mason flicked the ball on
towards goal and Jack Tuohy pressured keeper Cameron Terry into miss-hitting
his clearance, the ball fell to debutant Sam Madeley who’s first time shot evaded
everyone and went over the bar.

The home side continued to press Clitheroe in their search for an equaliser.
Mason broke into the Clitheroe penalty area and was fouled from behind. What
looked to be a clear penalty wasn’t given as referee Anthony Ball denied
Glossop’s appeals.

Mason continued to be a threat up top with his pace and Clitheroe resulted to
deliberately fouling the attacker with the referee again not stopping the game to
talk to Clitheroe’s defence or issue a caution.

Nevertheless, he did manage to get past the onrushing defenders and it took just
16 minutes for his first good chance. A ball over the top of the defence put Mason
one on one with the keeper. The keeper rushed out to narrow the striker’s angle
and did well as he tried to chip him.

Just seconds later, the ball fell kindly to Will Beesley on the left hand side of the
box, his powerful strike was straight at Cameron Terry who was able to make the
save.

Half an hour passed and Glossop were still a goal down. Adam Cooper did
fantastically to win a corner, from the resulting corner there were appeals for
handball which were turned down by the referee.

Another interesting decision followed from a throw in. Cooper’s long throw
caused chaos in the penalty area. The ball was flicked on towards goal and as the
keeper tried to claim the ball, his own defender blocked him off yet the referee
decided that the defender fouling his own goalkeeper was a foul and gave a free
kick.

Following on from Madeley’s early chance, he had another just before half time.
Matty Russell delivered a pacey cross into the box but Madeley couldn’t stretch
far enough to divert the ball towards goal.

Glossop went into the break 1-0 down but could take confidence from the good
chances they had created.

Immediately after the restart, Jason Hill had a tame shot saved after good work
from Russell.

On 60 minutes, North End had a corner that was taken from the left. The ball in
evaded everybody except for Madeley who was at the back post, he had acres of
space however his volley went high and wide. A golden chance for Glossop to
level.

Andy Bishop was brought on as well as Darren McKnight to add a different
dimension to Glossop’s attack and Bishop was involved straight away. With just
10 minutes to go, Bishop’s header found Mason who was through on goal, a
defender tracked back and challenged Mason in the area with the referee again
saying no to the penalty appeals.

The second sub McKnight, then had a fizzing shot from the edge of the area saved
by Terry which was to be Glossop’s last chance.

With 5 minutes to go, Clitheroe had a corner, which was sent to the far post,
Substitute Ben Matthews headed the ball off the underside of the bar, the
linesman flagged for a goal and Clitheroe had their second.

That was the killer blow for Glossop with the game finishing 2-0. An incredibly
unlucky result for The Hillmen who will feel disappointed to not have picked up
any points.
