Former Championship Winner passes away

By Andy Sutton

It's with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of former Gingerbread Ray Barnard.

Born in Middlesbrough, he signed professional terms for his hometown club in 1950, going on to make 118 appearances at right-back, 113 in the league and five in the FA Cup.

He then joined Lincoln City, where he made 43 league appearances before joined Grantham for the 1963/64 season. Ray went on to play in all but 2 of the clubs games during the 1963/64 Midland League Championship season, he remained an ever-present the following season as the Gingerbreads finished runners-up. His third and final season saw only saw a further 8 appearances for the club. During a Grantham career that saw him play 97 times, scoring twice, Barnard later moved onto play for Lincoln Claytons.
