Halkyn slay the Dragons
By Jack Seery
Away victory in Mostyn
Yesterday saw us return to the top of the league after overcoming a Mostyn Dragons team, who have had mixed results from the opening weeks of the league campaign.
After last week's defeat (Halkyn Utd FC 2-4 Mynydd Isa Spartans (Goalscorers Ry Brown and Sêan Wilkes) the lads knew that a reaction was required after not performing to the standards expected the week before. The first half saw Halkyn fall behind to a deflected shot after 15 minutes played, however this kicked started the game in terms of tempo and play that's required on a weekly basis to win football games in the league.
Witin five minutes it was 1-1 with
Jon Edmonds scoring on his old junior football stomping ground with another superbly worked goal after 20 minutes. Going into the last twenty five minutes of the first period, Mostyn again took the lead, despite the majority of possession being with the visiting team. Another quick reaction and response saw Halkyn draw level with
Ryan Oldfield heading in a whipped cross from the left hand side by
Alex Roberts.
After some firm words in the changing room at half time, the second half was a different story with Halkyn scoring three more and being defensively better as the game progressed. Again
Jon Edmonds reminded everybody of his natural ability to find the back of the net scoring two more to take his total to three in the game and his tally to top goalscorer in the league so far with 13.
Connor Maguire scored his third goal of the season, taking his tally to one goal in every two games so far, after he kept calm and drove the ball past the Mostyn goalkeeper from 10 yards out.
It was also pleasing to see Michael Radcliffe lace up his boots, who returned to the pitch after an injury period in his career. Coming off the bench for the last period of the game. He was unlucky not to grab a goal, after losing his marker and firing a shot inches wide of the post.
Final Score - Mostyn Dragons 2-5 Halkyn Utd FC
Man of the match -
