Hartlepool Rovers 41 Redcar 19

Hartlepool Rovers ended their season with a try-scoring bonus point 41-19 win over Redcar at the New Friarage on Saturday.

A brace of tries by centre Jack Gunn led the way for the Whites with Ryan Foreman, Daz Fawcett and the Railton brothers Michael and Steven also getting touchdowns.

Redcar were already relegated from Durham Northumberland One and arrived on West View Road with only two substitutes-not ideal on a very hot day.

Rovers were 3-0 up after three minutes with Foreman slotting a well-judged 28 metre penalty.

The lead switched hands on eight minutes when flanker Dominic Ayre crossed in the Steetley Corner and Daniel Addison’s conversion gave Redcar a 7-3 lead.

After a couple of near-misses, and tighthead Billy Lloyd being halted just short, Foreman made the line under pressure and, although he missed the extra points, he had taken the lead back Rovers’ way 8-7.

Tyrone Church broke upfield after 28 minutes and Gunn showed the value of supporting the ball-carrier when Church sent him away to the line from 12 metres out for a 13-7 lead.

Redcar went in at the interval 14-13 ahead with Neil Young again showing Redcar’s liking for the Steetley Corner, Addison again kicking a good conversion.

The Friaragemen regained the lead from their first attack of the second half when Joe Little broke and handed on to Gunn to go in and Foreman nailed the touchline conversion for Rovers to go 20-14 up.

A home throw-in at a lineout on half way on 51 minutes saw Rovers storm into the away 22 where the ball was released from the pack and Daz Fawcett sold a dummy before running home and kicking the conversion for a 27-14 advantage.

Rovers had a big crowd right behind them and they treated the supporters to a great try after 55 minutes.

Redcar had been pressing for a score of their own but lost a lineout on the Rovers’ five metre line and Taz Pelser took the free ball and headed upfield. After support from Gunn and Michael Railton he continued the move and offloaded to Steven Railton to touchdown just to the left of the posts. Fawcett’s conversion was good and the lead had grown to 34-14.

Rovers leaked a try on 60 minutes when Addison was on the end of a good passing move across the pitch and the hosts’ lead had been cut to 34-19.

The White Shirts went into the closing stages still looking for more tries and their sixth came on 72 minutes when Fawcett and Pelser linked up well to create a chance for Michael Railton and his strong running saw him score a good try, Foreman’s conversion making the final score 41-19.
