WHITTON UNITED 2 HAVERHILL ROVERS 4

Haverhill’s picked up their second consecutive win on their travels to climb to 11th in the table, Whitton finding themselves 4-0 down at the break for the second game in a row but making the end result interesting after bagging two goals in a three min

THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION

The away side led with just nine minutes gone, Marc Abbott’s free kick near the right touch line and just inside the Whitton half leaving goalkeeper Josh Hender in two minds and Mark Lovell took advantage, running across goal and guiding his leaping header into the top right corner.

The lead was increased after 22 minutes when Lovell turned provider, curling the ball round a defender to play in Mickey Davis, who got a toe to the ball ahead of Hender to roll it into the bottom left corner from 12 yards out.

Abbott has a 20 yard effort on the run palmed away from the near bottom left corner on 33 minutes before he put his side three goals to the good three minutes later, a penalty kick being awarded after a handball and Abbott netted from the spot, despite Hender getting something on his effort.

With 41 minutes gone Haverhill scored their fourth of the afternoon, Abbott taking the ball to the right of goal being chipping it to the back post; Luke Haines side foot volleyed the ball back across the inside of the six yard box and Davis dually swept the ball home from close range.

Whitton first had a chance back into the game on the hour mark with a spot kick of their own after Alfie Carroll was judged to have handled the ball on the ground, Kevin Inglis seeing his kick taken away from the bottom corner by ‘keeper Mitchell Ware.

On 74 minutes the hosts scored what they may have imagined was a consolation, Zehnn Young’s free kick on the right in his own half being allowed to bounce and not being cleared before Jamie Cole’s controlled volley found the net.

Two minutes later and Whitton found the net for a second time, Inglis’ great diagonal half volley from the right back position playing in Cole to beat Ware at his near left post.

Chances then dried up, however, as did the hosts’ hope of a late comeback.

ROVERS : Ware, Halls (Sartini, 75), Fox, Yallop, Holmes, Carroll, Abbott, Burr, Lovell, Haines (Noble, 85), Davis (Tait, 68).
