Last years Lancashire Cup champions were hosted in their first league game by a lively Liverpool Collegiate side and although the score line would indicate a heavy defeat, it probably flattered the Merseysiders a little but no doubting they deserved the victory. The game was very tight first half and Heaton Moor created the better opportunities, but basic handling errors in the opposing 22 denied them on two occasions. On the stroke of half time, Collegiate were three up due to a penalty. But they turned Moor over with great defence, won a penalty and a fantastic kick by their full back gave them a lineout in a very advantageous position. From this lineout, they executed a tremendous, rolling maul which gave them a ten-point cushion at half time. A well worked score.
Again, the second half started very tight but Moor were finding it difficult to impose themselves, Collegiate much faster to any breakdown and the defining score arrived ten minutes in, when after a series of penalties, Collegiate broke the Moor resistance with a try to open up a fifteen-point gap. Adding insult to injury, soon after Evan Coffey received a yellow card for a dangerous tackle. With a man up and a commanding lead, the Liverpool lads started to play some great rugby, the next try the result of a stunning Crossfield kick by the fly half. No way back for Moor now. But to their credit, they kept battling. Collegiate crossed for two more tries to put a real gloss on their victory but with Connor Bailey to the fore, Heaton Moor refused to give up! But they couldn’t get the score which their efforts would have deserved
All in all, a chastening experience for Heaton Moor, but they will dust down and prepare for a home fixture against Newcastle next week to hopefully kick start their campaign
