Soham Town Rangers 5(3) Hertford Town 0(0)
In football parlance it would be fair to say that the Blues ‘didn’t turn up’ for this middle-of-the-table visit to Soham Town Rangers. The hosts were stronger physically and appeared to have the greater will to win.
Kicking with a strong wind at their backs in the first half, Soham made the most of their advantage and built a three goal lead to take into the break. Goals in the 15th, 28th and 37th minute gave the Blues a ‘mountain to climb’ in the second half, but one which was not beyond them, given the conditions.
The manner in which they started the second period certainly suggested a belief that the game was not over for them and after some early pressure a potentially game-changing incident occurred ten minutes in. Recent recruit Eman Osei was put through on goal and knocked the ball past the home keeper who had come charging out of his goal. With an empty net beckoning, Eman was pole-axed by the keeper on the edge of the box. The keeper had denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity but, to everybody present’s surprise, the referee only saw fit to punish the incident with a yellow card and the award of a free kick on the edge of the box.
The free kick unfortunately came to nothing and any hopes the Blues had of a comeback evaporated with it.
Two further goals in the 61st and 67th minutes then served only to rub salt in the wounds of a dispirited Blues team and, although they continued to press forward in search of a consultation goal, they were unable to add to the scoreline and the game finished with a disappointing five goal defeat.
