Mold Mauled, Butts Spanked

Match Report: Hinckley 98 v 0 Mold-Butts 15th April 2018, by Andy Duggins

Hinckley U14s continued their fantastic form for the season, scoring 98 points without reply in two brilliant wins against a touring side from North Wales and auld enemy Barkers Butts, in another entertaining tri-tournament at Leicester Road.
The first game was a closely fought contest between the visiting teams, Mold beating Butts by 12-5 in front of the home crowd who were closely weighing up the unknown Welsh opponents.
Game 2: Hinckley 53 – 0 Barkers Butts

Hinckley kicked off, playing in their blue strip, against a big Butts team who had given the black and ambers a tough game in their previous encounter earlier in the season. This time however, Hinckley ran riot, scoring nine tries, the first of which followed an early tackle by Barnes, Drakeford steal and run by Newitt. Hinckley maintained possession and Allen glided through for the opening score.

Try number two came immediately from the re-start, Buckler taking the kick-off and making good yards with Allen in support. The ball was fed to Jacques who blasted his way through the attempted slap-tackle to score under the uprights. Allen converted, increasing Hinckley’s lead to 12-0.

A stunned Butts side kicked back to Hinckley, Miller fielding the catch and taking the home team over the halfway line. The ball was recycled and picked up by Drakeford who showed tremendous pace, out-stripping the Butts back line to splashdown for Hinckley’s third try, taking the score to 17-0.

No matter which way Butts kicked back to Hinckley, it didn’t make any difference and, after an incredible ball juggling display between Allen and Jacques, which the Harlem Globetrotters would have been proud of, Burton plucked the ball from the air to bulldoze his way through from the halfway line to score try number four for Hinckley. Allen’s conversion extended Hinckleys lead to 24-0.

Butts eventually enjoyed a brief spell of territory and possession inside Hinckley’s half, which seemed to coincide with the referee finding his whistle again, but the black and ambers’ defence remained solid with notable big hits by Jacques and Burton, and a brilliant tackle and turnover by Newitt to allow Hinckley to clear their lines. Hinckley stole the ball from the resuling line-out and passed it neatly through the backs’ hand to Jacques, who smashed through for his second and Hinckley’s fifth try of the match. Another successful conversion by Allen further increased Hinckley’s lead to 31-0 to end a fabulous first half display.

Hinckley made a number of changes for the second half and scored within 12 seconds of the kick-off, Drakeford gathering the loose ball to dart through for his second try, taking the score to 36-0.

Try number seven followed shortly after, Jacques taking the re-start and touching down after combining superbly with Allen for his second hat trick of the day. Allen converted to give Hinckley a dominant 43-0 lead.

Hinckley were on fire and further breaks by Buckler, Burton and Drakeford nearly resulted in another score, but the Butts eventually started tackling and managed to kick clear. Hinckley counter-attacked, Jacques bouncing off an opposition tackler before finding Hutton and Burton in support, who charged through for his second try of the game extending Hinckley’s lead to 48-0.

Hinckley’s ninth and final try came after a fantastic all-round team effort, Duggins gathering the re-start superbly, the ball was then recycled and taken forward by Allen, A. Whittingham and Hutton. The ball went loose and Butts counter-attacked, but Hinckley’s outstanding defence and rucking resulted in a turnover and the ball was passed smartly through the backs’ hands to Allen, who rounded the opposition to score out-wide, taking Hinckley over the half century at 53-0.
Hinckley came close in the final passage of play, as Barnes picked up from the base of a scrum and galloped into the Butts’ 22, but the referee stopped play for an injury to a Butts player and decided they had received enough punishment for the day, blowing his whistle to end the game.
