League Season Concludes With A Fine Victory

By Simon Dickens

The Greens demolished Shortwood United 5-0 to end their league season on a high....

It was a fitting finale in their last league fixture of the season, passing the ball with consummate ease and they produced a typical free flowing football style that we have come to expect from any Jules McCalmon side.

Those few hardly soles present witnessed some excellent shooting and none better than the visitors opener, Declan Benjamin riffled an unstoppable shot into the top right hand corner of the net from all of thirty yards with 12 minutes on the clock. This was a lead that was soon to be extended when a sublime forward ball from Harry Whitehead found Lewis Coyle (pictured) in acres of space, with only the keeper to beat a simple lob did the job and it was 0-2.

To their credit Shortwood never gave up and concentrated in getting their entire team goal-side when ever The Greens had the ball, this resulted in much of the action resembling a training game with passes sprayed in every direction. Lewis Coyle found the frame of the goal from an acute angle prior to the third goal. This goal duly arriving five minutes before the break, but in unusual circumstances. Coyle who reveled all night in the amount of ball and space he was allowed was upended in the box which saw the lady referee pointing to the spot. Nothing unusual about that I hear you say, but no sooner than the whistle had gone we witnessed our keeper Sam Warrell placing the ball on the penalty spot to take the kick, an act clearly arranged prior to the start of the game. The resulting penalty flashed into the net for a 0-3 half time lead.

It was more of the same in the second half as further goals from Coyle and and a Darius Browne wrapped up the scoring, both these goals were worthy strikes, but In between these two Benjamin was at it again with a howitzer of a shot from 25 yards that smacked against the bar with such force in rebounded further into play than then the shot it self. So we finish with our equal best result of the season a 0-5 scoreline before our Senior Cup Final on Wednesday against Oxford City KO 7:30 at Thame.
