Town need a break

By

A change of luck required for Lydney

Lydney are certainly due a change of luck soon, after suffering their 10th defeat on the bounce against 6th placed Binfield down The Rec on Saturday.
All the goals in an entertaining game came in the first 35 minutes, with Lydney losing out to the odd one in 5.
Town welcomed back Jack Rutter following suspension, but were without Lewis & Niall Halford, Kerry Hale and Miles Ferguson. Ross Lindsay made a start at right back.
On a freezing cold day Town's bad luck reared it's head as early as the 8th minute. Keeper Rich Thomas made a superb one handed stop from a blistering effort by Carlos Santora, only for the ball to fall kindly at the feet of Binfield number 9 Ian Davies who stroked home.

The early shock failed to rock Lydney and they equalised inside a minute. Following some good work from Rutter and Macklin the ball found it's way to youngster Frankie Johnson on the edge of the area. The birthday boy(pictured) rolled a brilliantly controlled finish inside the far post for his 2nd goal in successive games.
The game flowed end to end but it was the visitors who went back in front on 16 minutes. An attempted clearance by a Lydney defender rebounded into the path of Binfield's Davies and there was no luck involved this time as the striker curled a beauty into the top corner.

Once again Lydney refused to crumble and earned their just reward 2 minutes later. Good work down the right by Lindsay saw Pete Macklin play in Frankie Johnson with a switch of play. Running at the back four Johnson curled a cross into the far post where Jack Rutter was on hand to finish with a controlled half volley.

As the half drew to a close Binfield enjoyed the majority of possession but were looking decidedly average at the back. Their strength obviously was going forward and 10 minutes before the break they went ahead for the 3rd time. Thomas denied Davies his hattrick with another point blank save but Town's luck was again out when Sean Moore tapped home the lose ball. The same player missed a glorious chance a minute later when he rolled the ball wide of an empty net. Lydney pushed on looking for a 3rd equaliser but it never came and the visitors went in 3-2 up at the break.
With manager Lee serving the second of his two game touchline ban, assistant Stuart Liddington rang the changes for the second half with Ross Gabriel and Keelan Hamblett replacing Owen Williams and Liam Sheppard. Pete Macklin slipped into defence to allow Gabriel to play up top.
Town showed good spirit after the break and enjoyed more of the ball, Declan Morley-Lyne tested Craven in the Binfield goal but was thwarted as the keeper pushed his effort for a corner. Gabriel also gave the Binfield defence plenty to think about but the ball failed to run kindly on the day.

Binfield continued to have their moments and Town keeper Thomas was called upon once again to deny Davies a hattrick with another great stop in a one on one. Sean Moore did eventual get the better of Thomas but Lydney skipper Sam Elliott cleared his shot off the line.

Town's final throw of the dice saw Lindsay make way for the pacey Toumani Sidibi for the last 15 minutes in an a effort to find a 3rd leveller.
The last chance of the game fell to Lydney when Gabriel set up Morley-Lyne. This time however Lydney's former golden boot winner screwed his shot wide. Pete Macklin was the majority choice for Lydney's MOM for his versatility and calmness in the heat of the action.

Lydney are at home again this weekend, weather permitting, when Ascot Utd visit the Rec. The Yellamen are currently 8 points ahead of Lydney but have played 6 more games. Three points would provide some welcome relief.
