Mariners continue run at Silverlands...

Marine recorded their best League win of the season at the Silverlands on Saturday, as they beat play off chasing Buxton 3-0 to continue their 100% 2019 record.

The Mariners have now won four of their last five games and deservedly took the points after being rarely troubled by the 7th placed hosts, a first half effort cleared off the line by Kenny Strickland being the closest the Bucks came to piercing a solid Marine defence.

Marine manager Neil Young made two changes to the side that won at North Ferriby United, new loan signing Joe Hilton taking over as gloveman from the departed Paddy Wharton and Kenny Strickland replacing James Murray in a tactical switch.

The visitors were on the attack early on with Danny Mitchley bringing a good save from Theo Roberts in the home goal, as the Whites enjoyed the advantage of the inclement conditions in the first period.

The Bucks had a major let off midway through the half, Steve Irwin heading against the post from close range with Niall Cummins putting the rebound wide as Marine continued to have the better of proceedings.

The Mariners took the lead three minutes before the interval, Charley Edge delivering an excellent free kick from the right and Liam Hynes rising to flash a header inside the far post from six yards.

Buxton forced a number of corners in the second half as the rain continued to sweep across the ground, with Hilton dealing with any danger comfortably.

Marine had chances of their own form corners, Chris Doyle and then Cummins getting round the back but neither could force the ball past Roberts from close range.

The crucial second goal of the game came on 73 minutes, Irwin anticipating a backpass and pouncing to skip past Roberts and slide the ball in to the unguarded net.

Mitchley put any further debate about the destination of the points firmly to bed just three minutes later, racing through on goal before drilling past the advancing custodian from the edge of the area.

Marine return to the MTA on Saturday when they entertain Stalybridge Celtic (KO 3pm).
