TRUE GRIT from TRUE VETS

A poor turn out from the guys this week as only 9 players present, with 11 missing from last weeks squad due to weddings, holidays, unavailable or generally AWOL!!

This meant that Manager Gordon Reed and Secretary Dave Wright were drafted into make up the numbers and proceed to be the oldest 2 players on the pitch.

Against a talented Cambridge side the match started evenly. Vinny Colby, on one of his rare appearances, caused problems to the Cambridge defence down the flanks for the first twenty minutes, then proceeded to cause problems for the Newmarket defence by losing possession in dangerous areas??.... Connors offered him some useful advice in his usual manner!

Reedy had to leave the pitch for 5 minutes to carry out running repairs to his boots !...they had decided even if he survived the match they would not. Clearly missing his leadership he found the team 0-2 down on his return!..the score remained till half time.

The second half started with early Cambridge dominance but the Jockeys gradually got back in the game. Vinny was floored following a corner and Loz Harvey duly converted the resultant spot kick, 1-2. All was not over, in the last minute a fine run and cross from Phil Shea was met by Reedy at the far post, who rolled back the years, and netted the equaliser!!

Jockeys may consider themselves slightly fortunate but with this scratch and elderly team they showed true grit in making it a competitive game. The opposition were disappointed and departed straight back to Cambridge missing out on the post match sausage and chips served up at the ‘Boot’….the pub locals eagerly took advantage of the surplus offerings?
