Those sick, injured, watching their son playing footy, watching their son play rugby or didn’t fancy the journey!!!

Despite early worries we would be unable to raise a team for this fixture as happened last season, we came up with enough numbers and made our way down the motorways to South East London to play Crofton.

This is a fixture arranged annually by our very own Bob Shortland, who used to play with some of their guys last century!!...and maintains contact with them. He actually stayed over the previous night and met us at the venue.

Not having played for a couple of months the Jockeys looked particularly rusty but despite this took and early lead when a mazy run and shot from Little Jon was spilled by the ’keeper and Mad willy pounced to net the rebound from 10yards (sorry, meant 10inches!!) This then followed a second from Fozzy, who shook off the effects of Australian flu, to round the ‘keeper and confidently score.

Now we took the opportunity in bring on Bob S, who was seriously looking the worse for wear after his night out with his past team mates. His judgement was either hampered by the previous night intake or he had come to some ‘arrangement’ with the opponents as he then spent the remainder of the half constantly passing to them….and he thought we wouldn’t notice.

The second half had us kicking up the slope and with their keeper sending his kicks almost into our penalty area the Jockeys found themselves under the cosh. They soon got a goal back when our man-mountain Vowdy found himself shoved off the ball unfairly, and Crofton scrambled it in despite the objections from all around to the referee, who it has to be said, had a good game.
Minutes later they equalised when Pauly passed to his mucker Loz in the box…(hang about, Loz wasn’t playing!!) and their striker, who looked nothing like Loz, had the simplest task of scoring.

No more goals ensued, but plenty of action. Little Jon launched himself like an Excocet missile at a Reedy cross and would have netted like Keith Howchin in the 1987 cup final (google it!!)if he was 5’1” and not 5’0”, he followed this up with an acrobatic overhead kick that only just missed. Crofton had chances, their main striker ,who resembled Pavorotti, hit a screamer from 20yards that our Carl kept out with and equally impressive save. So it ended 2-2, a fair result we all agreed.

Bob S was questioned in the changing room after the game where his actual allegiances lay??.. he removed his yellow Jockeys shirt and unveiled a red Crofton shirt underneath!!!..well it looked like one but it was hairy and flabby! He further alienated his team mates in the clubhouse after when he was spotted mixing with the Crofton players apologising to the couple of players he hadn’t managed to pass to!!!

A long journey home, in time for Reedy to enjoy seeing the mighty Reds turn over Manshitty, the last 5 minutes of that game aged him more than any Vets game!

Anyway a belated happy new year to all and see you all(including Bob) in a fortnight away to Cambridge?
