Oban Open League Campaign with Win

By Oban CC

Oban began the defence of the Argyll Cricket League with an 80-runs-victory against Carradale at a sun-drenched Taynuilt.

Batting first, the hosts lost openers Mackenzie and Leach cheaply but this only brought the free-scoring Allan Laycock to the middle. Ably supported by Duncan Campbell who scored 15, Laycock dispatched the Carradale attack to all corners, passing 50 within 15 overs. Tristan Carre played with tremendous composure to see-off the disciplined Carradale bowling, scoring a vital 34. Laycock continued to punish anything astray, smashing eleven fours and four sixes in his 83. Belshaw and Kahn's partnership added another 24 runs to take Oban to 178 for 8 after 40 overs.

Having never beaten Oban in ten previous matches, the men from Kintyre were looking to score at 4.5 runs per over to win.
Santos dismissed Caines, Hall and Bennett all out leg before wicket to leave Carradale on 13 for 3. Morkel and Harris led the fightback with a partnership of 50 and at this stage the visitors only needed another 116 to win with 7 wickets and 24 overs remaining. However man of the match Laycock was about to spoil the party for Carradale by tearing through their middle-order, returning figures of 5 wickets for 17 runs. Carradale ended on 98 all out but it was a closer match than the scoreline suggests.

This Sunday Oban are in Argyll League duty again with an away trip to Dunadd to play Mid Argyll CC.
