Ollerton End Winless Run!

By

Ollerton Town got a long awaited win after a hard fought display against Worsbrough

Ollerton Town put an end to a run of seven league games without a win, and five successive defeats in all competitions, after a hard-fought win against promotion-chasing Worsbrough Bridge on Saturday.
Just like Ollerton's previous league triumph, against Harworth, Dave Winter's men edged it by the odd goal to nil with prolific marksman Gav King scoring the winner in the first half.
Worsbrough may feel like they deserved something from the game after putting Ollerton under some strong pressure but in truth, Ollerton 'keeper Phil McGann was rarely called into action whilst at the other end, Aiden Tyas in the Worsbrough goal had to make some smart saves to keep the deficit at just one.
It was a very blustery afternoon down at The FastFrame and as expected, the wind had a big effect on the game. Both teams struggled to adapt in the opening stages with neither side being able to create any clear cut chances.
With the game's first real opportunity, Ollerton took the lead. In the 23rd minute, Lewis Bingham did brilliantly to beat a defender and slip a perfectly-weighted ball through for Gav King who finished across goal with his usual composure.
Worsbrough began to enjoy a lot of the ball after falling behind and they looked to test Ollerton's defence with a direct style of play but the home backline, including debutant Liam Arnold, stood firm to keep Phil McGann fairly untested.
In the 37th minute, it could have been 2-0 as King nearly grabbed his and Ollerton's second. Aaron Sennett-Neilson did brilliantly down the right flank to beat his man and the youngster whipped a ball to the near post where King was waiting to sweep an effort just off target.
The visitors had their best chance of the half in the 40th minute after a free kick was awarded 25 yards out following a handball by Ollerton captain Sam Stretton. Kieran Hirst tried his luck but his effort was easily saved by McGann.
Early in the second half, Ollerton had to throw their bodies on the line to keep their lead intact after a goal mouth scramble from a ball into the box. Thankfully for the home side they were able to eventually clear the danger.
With just over twenty minutes to go, Sennett-Neilson showcased the trickery he possesses by skipping past two Worsbrough defenders near the byline before curling a shot into the hands of Tyas.
Ollerton then had a ten minute spell of dominance where they could, and should, have added to their lead after creating several, clear scoring opportunities.
Sennett-Neilson was involved once again as he went through on goal before seeing his shot from close range saved by Tyas. The rebound spun out towards striker Conor Higginson but the former Worksop man was unable to make contact with a difficult bouncing ball.
Two minutes later, Ollerton unlocked Worsbrough's defence once again. King's cross from the right found Higginson in space in the middle. He held the ball up well before setting it for Bingham who curled an effort wide of the target.
Ollerton continued to attack and with ten minutes to go, they missed their best chance of the lot. Higginson raced clear one-on-one only for Tyas to smother the chance. Bingham picked up the rebound just outside the six yard box and rounded Tyas only to smash the ball over the bar from close range.
King then tried his luck after finding space on the left of the box but his low shot found the side netting after momentarily looking like it would creep in at the near post.
Ollerton's wastefulness in front of goal kept Worsbrough in the game and the Barnsley-based visitors threw everything at the home side in the final stages of the game to try and salvage a point.
In the 86th minute, one of Worsbrough's many corners into the area caused pinball in the box but McGann was off his line quickly to get to the loose ball first.
With only seconds left on the clock, another Worsbrough set piece found a man in the middle and his thumping header looked to be heading on target but it hit a body on it's way through and the ball was hacked away as Ollerton held on for a vital three points.
